Ok John , Mine has a 1 inch drop base and a 2 inch filter so i put a 2 inch plastic cup on top of my air cleaner lid and the dog house lid will not close So you do need the drop base But my lid does have a x brace in the underside of the lid. mine is a 69 what year is yours ??? and i wonder when they added the x brace ??? but I ' would say it's all support.

Here is my thoughts get the engine in then put the 3 inch screw  (used to hold the air cleaner) in the carb and look from there  the discount from U.S. Auto is only a few bucks cheaper than Sumitt. if you click  on  US.Auto parts  return policy they only take returns if they made the mistake. where sumitt will take it back... Did you look on e-bay ???

good ideas, i'll wait till i get to that point before i can figure how i want to run one, going to a car show tomorrow 3 miles up the road, i'm grad its not any further this engines about shot, i need to turn it in as a core once i get the rebuilt one and they wont except it with pistons through the block, lol i'll be starting on it sunday, i'll pull everything out and get the trany rebuilt first, i'm also taking the front part of the dog box out, so i have plenty of room to work under the dash, heater cables need freed up, that 4 way flasher switch, and repair the birds nest of wires under there, i'll be taking lots of pictures so people on here can see whats involved in replacing everything, once you start on your throttle cable let me know, i'll probably do the same,
