Leaf spring bushings Empty Leaf spring bushings

Post by Fcat Thu Aug 15, 2019 5:42 am

So, haven't ask a question in a while...

Got my van in November and did my first road mile this week - mixed results!

Brakes felt a little weak - that could be a getting used to it thing but I discovered the front spring shackle (& maybe eye too) bushing is completely shot. I can't find a replacement in the UK but if by any chance anyone knows the sizes, I can try to get some Polyurethene ones made or see if there are any British applications in the same size?

    Thanks all

Thanks OutofSight - if I can't find a solution in the UK, may well give them a call.

The shackles take 4 of the rubber HB-930,,,,,,,,the forward ends have metal cartridges in them that are hard to find, so we put neoprene ones with a sleeve into them,,,,,,the right front spring uses a larger bushing than the other 3 springs,,,,,,,do a search here and you will find spring rebuilding information,,,,,,

    Thanks (yet again)

    Donivan - you're a star.

I should now be able to get the shackle bushes (ings) in Poly over here - that should get me on the road.

So, Have some shackle bushes ready to fit but have found that both Kingpins need sorting.

RockAuto have a kit and although it has nylon bushes, it will be an improvement - is this as much of a nightmare job as on some other vehicles? What is likely to be painful?

    Thanks all

I guess it depends on how your van feels about you messing with its kingpins,,,,,,some times those kingpins dont want to slide out of the axle without a fight,,,,,you can start by taking off the drum and removing the 2 lower backing plate bolts that hold the steering knuckle on,,,,then you can remove the axle locking pin and 2 end caps,,,,,chances are pretty good the kingpin wont  just fall down,,,,you can try and beat it down or jack it up with a jack,,,,if it dont have nylon bushings, then you can beat the bronze out with a 5/8" spark plug socket,,,,,,line up the zerk fitting hole when you put the new bushings in,,,,,,,so see what you got,,,,,,,

Thanks, have to say, most of the mechanical jobs I have done so far have been graciously received - hoping this goes the same way.

Did an oil change the other day and there was such a noticeable difference in running - you'd think I'd done a full tune-up!
