Anyway. I fixed the gear-selector-cable at the trans with a bike-lamp holder . Cleaned all windows & put the wheel caps on. Some pics for the insurance, to be ready when the engine runs fine & street test being passed.

Oil pan seems tight. Filled it up and cranked it. Runs smoothely while cold, stalls hot when selecting a gear. Lamda-Sensor says "way too lean in idle"... Will get to that tomorrow (it's supposed to rain).

Ja - but after advancing the ignition a little bit (engine ran much better, but still not done - any hint on howto adjust ignition while everything is mounted?? That's a horrible location to do the adjustment) one of the clamps (fixing the cooling hose to the thermostat housing) was leaking.... a new screw-type clamp fixed that one. Most likely, I'll replace all the clamps with screw-types. Although I do like the clamp type much better....

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
As it is Easter Monday (Happy Easter to all of you!) and everything is very quiet around I decided not to work on the engine today.
But some more quiet things done. Cat whiskers and glas run channel replaced on one side, door band sewed. But I guess it will tear apart again rather sooner than later.
The last one is (NOS?) cat whiskers with heavily rusted clips right out of the box. Anybody?
Old.

Rusty right out of the package is NOT a good way to get word of mouth advertising for a company...JMO

No,no, that was some old stock stuff inclluded in the package I bought 1.5 years ago. It looked like it already sat some dozen years with the truck. I had new cat whiskers already

Ok, that sounds better...I'm on vacation this week and finally starting putting some of the parts that have been sitting in the back of the van that I've been gathering for a few years now...I'm just trying to finally get it running so that I might be able to actually drive it this summer...time will tell.
You're APup is looking Good!!!

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
Yeah, thanks. Unfortunately, the first insurance declined cover: "condition is not sufficient for us to offer cover". Goddammit.
Anyway. I'm getting there. Upper cooling hose was still not tight, tightened the clamp further, hopefully it'll hold.
While replacing the glas run channels I found further wasp (or other insects) nests behind the run channels. Unbelievable....
Engine runs. Obviously idle was just set way too high. Now the shift between neutral and D/R does not cause too much of a rpm drop (see vid). The clonking noise in the background is me shifting between N/D/R. Vacuum is approx. 19-20inHg in N and 16-17 in D/R. I assume that the cam (phone) did not get all flashes of my timing light, because other than that the engine runs pretty smoothely at its rpm.
Further, adjusted the head lights tonight. My apparatus also enclosed

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
"Insurance declined cover" - I'm presuming they couldn't put a value on it due to the condition? Over here (U.K.) we can insure pretty much anything and agree the value with the insurer, that includes ongoing projects and the like. Would have thought there'd be similar specialists where you are; E.U. wide standards etc. Best of luck getting it ready for summer - had mine out at the weekend for its first event of the year - bit soggy, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
No, because classics do get much better insurance premiums (less use [e.g. max. 5000 mls/year], very dedicated owner [good condition], carefull driver [value preservation versus company car abuse] and so on), they actually do look careful at such requirements (good condition). They try to avoid insuring cars being abused for a small premium.
Today I painted the front bumper with a very thin cover in white. I think this is too much already. Will see this better, when daylight returns

Fortunately, THAT was a breeze. Approved as street legal and classic car - without any hickup.

And another breeze - even after hours, the local registration officials were extremely helpful (thanks a lot, if you guys read here) and I got the little one registered in short time. Short plate (usually a tough problem over here) was easy, they know about the problem with US cars, and short numbers are reserved for bikes and US cars, only
Shortly after - I was on the road. All worked fine (battery was a little depleted and the alternator cranked out 25 amps as load current, even with lights on!). Filled it up, got the first couple thumbs up. Overwhelmed with emotion, I could ride all night....
Some things left to do: clean up the truck bed and do some corrosion protection, exchange the speedo cable (the burnt one lets the speedo tremble (?) a little bit), exchange the temp sending unit (wrong resistance when cold/hot). But both parts are on its way, together with a new headlight switch. The dimming of the instrument cluster is not the best....

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
Thanks guys - that is really a great feeling.
And already had some fun with some miles done. Track on front axle as well as leaf springs will be done monday in a week.
Currently, I've taken the speedo out - made terrible noise, will check its inside.
Battery should be fully charged after approx. 1h drive, but still gets charged with 8-9 amps.... ?

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
For anyone's benefit. The speedo made a terrible screaming noise. i checked all its inner workings and found out that the input shaft (where you mount the speedo cable) had approx. 1/64" axial play. If you push the input shaft's fixing collar towards the speedo housing (-> axial play on the outside of the speedo equals almost zero), then the speedo-bell (connected to the needle, but not the input shaft) had no play, hence the needle is stuck at some random speed. That creates the screaming noise. Take a look at the miniature shim I cut and filed from a small and very slim (1/100"!) piece of brass to fit inbetween the speedo housing and the input shaft collar to reduce that axial play.
I hope that I found the right technical words, maybe the pics show a little more detail. The shim is below the pliars, and the second pic shows the shim in place. Click on the pics for a bigger pic.
Tomorrow I'm going to test drive it.

69,
Don't forget to put a few drops of oil into that small cup on top of the bushing. That is often overlooked and the bushing and the cable just gets dried out. That can make the cable or the bushing bind and the speedometer jump and make noise.

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
Thanks, sweetvan.
We took the speedo cable out yesterday and put good grease together with some wd40 on the cable. At some places, there was rust already... It was new, but dry. The cup was greased with wd40 as well.
Trust it will work tomorrow. A long cable with lots of "play" is always a challenge...

Sehr Schon! cool to see one of these in Germany. I was there last Summer and to my surprise saw quite a few nice old Mopars at a local car show.

Re: New from Germany '69 A100 pickup
Speedo is getting better over time, will lube the speedo even more.
The truck performed remarkably well on my first longer trip last weekend (approx. 50 miles one way). Even in city traffic/jams no problems with heat!
Saturday next meeting, this time almost 2hrs drive/100mls one way - a Mopar only event. Can't wait for it, as many have followed my German resto thread.
Of course, there are many noises still to be identified and fixed, but hey, enjoying the good weather to take some trips. Mileage after first full refill was approx. 10 mls/gallon. I'm not too worried, will get that up after redoing the choke mimic. I think up to 15 mls/gallon should be possible, as I am not a racer. Also, the throttle lever to the trans has to be re-bend, as there is no kick down possible at this time - the rod is limited at the last half inch by the rear doghouse - and i already removed my insulation at that area...
On the Autobahn, I tested 75mls/h so far. Quite loud at 3500rpm, but I'm sure it can do even more, driving quality was also very good after having fixed the toe in. Drivetrain is very quite, good. I'd think that 60-65mls/h @ 3000rpm is a good travel speed. That's what's allowed on other roads as well.

Just keep "Dialing In" those settings and you'll be cruising nicely in no time! Let us know how you make out Saturday at the Mopar event. If you get a chance, we'd love to see some pics!

Congrats on successful maiden voyage. Careful with the kick down out of adjustment, when this is out of adjustment in can damage the transmission.
