Re: Taking A Breather
You want m to get that right windshield post that they want $100 for while I am at it? Did you do something with that balancer? I think you should pound my balancer on your engine after you epoxy the key in, just so you can drive your van to the van show next week,,,,,are your timing marks on the passenger side like the new engine or on the drivers side on your timing cover?

Re: Taking A Breather
I don't want to pay $100! Do you think that is fair?? I'd rather pay $50. If you are really going out there to get the grille (man, did someone really smash you that bad?) then we should get a lot of stuff and go for a discount. That rear bumper is in better shape than mine, at least from a straightening and re-chroming standpoint. And my van is listing to starboard (so much stuff I didn't notice when I bought it) and that one has a healthy looking set of rear leaf springs. I was thinking maybe just a spacer on my flatter one, but maybe get that pair? I dunno... Call me before you go out there.
I think my van would make it to the show as is. And if not, there is always AAA.

Re: Taking A Breather
I was in Don's passenger seat when this SUV decided to just put it in reverse and back up. How do you not see a bright red van sitting right behind you (with its horn blaring)?! It was a sickening, slow-motion crunch!! Like a bad dream.

Re: Taking A Breather
OK, so I now have a running van again!
A buddy of mine suggested that before testing the compression on the used engine I bought, I should put some Mystery Oil in the cylinders to break up any carbon deposits since there is no telling how long it's been since it ran, and get an accurate reading. It sounded kinda weird but I researched it and several people online said it's a good method. So another week to wait to let the oil do it's deal.
But I was getting tired of not driving the van so I decided to put some loc-tite weld on the messed up keyway in the current motor and see if I could hammer on the good balancer Don loaned me. It worked!! It worked really well in fact. I was worried the epoxy would not hold as I put on the pulley, but instead of banging away, I used several little taps all around the do-nut hole with a regular hammer. It only took a few minutes to get it on there a millimeter at a time. I did a test drive last night and again to the beach to surf this morning and it purrs like a kitten. So now I can relax a bit if the new engine checks out and take the time to change all the seals and gaskets, new water and oil pump etc. I am stoked to be on the road again. In fact, I wish I had done this in the first place (like Don told me to!) and then just see how long it will go. Maybe weld the darn thing again ha ha.
It seems a shame to chuck this motor, it seems to run fine, but then again what do I know. It hasn't been thoroughly checked out for compression etc. either, or properly tuned. If all it really needs is a crank I have seen new ones online for under $200.

Re: Taking A Breather
You will wear out your welcome REAL fast by leaving a puddle of oil where ever you stop,,,,,,your Homeowners Association will have NO TROUBLE tracking down the person leaving a trail of oil drips in the neighborhood,,,,,but it is temporary,,,,at least in my book,,,,,that keyway in the crankshaft is worn to 3 times its original size, so I expect the key, balancer and keyway to self destruct eventually,,,,,and there is no bolt hole on the end of a 6 cylinder Chevy crankshaft,,,,you have to beat it on to install it,,,,,,and use a puller to remove it,,,,,unless,of course,it was only held on by the fan belt like your original,,,,,

Re: Taking A Breather
OK, I'm not disagreeing, but how does the repair sleeve prevent oil from leaking? Trying to figure that out...
Even though the balancer that came with that Highway67 engine looks good, I think I will pay the $70 to get a new one.

Re: Taking A Breather
Well,,,,,,the seal gets covered with dirt and oil and it wears a groove into the balancer,,,this lets the oil escape out of the timing cover and all over the front of the engine,,,,the sleeve just slides over the end of the balancer and covers up the groove so the seal is tight again,,,,,and since that engines timing marks are on the other side, you will need to cut a new notch on the balancer if you want it to work on your van,,,,,

On the other hand, it's about $100 in gas away from me, and sold with no guarantee.
