    Thanks Duane.
Just out of curiosity how do you distinguish between the 9" & the 8.8" rear ends? I see both in the shop manual.

I'm not really sure about that one. The term "nine inch" refers to the diameter of the ring gear. 144's used a 7 inch ring gear. 170's used a 7.25 ring gear. The 240's all used 9 inch as you know. Now, I believe slightly different ratios may have changed the actual diameter of the ring gear. When I hear 8.8 I think of the rear used in late model Mustangs and such. A completely differnt animal than our nine inch rears. It's built more like the 7's and 7.25's. I know Ford made some 9.25 inch rears. Still called them 9's. I'm not sure where you are seeing this 8.8 info. I have a 67 manual and it makes no reference to the ring gear size. It only defines them as integral carrier type (7.25) and removable carrier type (9").

If you can let me know where you found the 8.8 reference I can check it out and see what I can come up with.

Duane ~ I noticed this in my 66 maual in the rear axel specifications( section 4-3 in the 66 manual). It lists 7.25, 8.75 & 9 in Ring Gear Diameters. I guess I miss typed when I wrote 8.8 I was thinking about the 8.75 I had seen in the manual.
I happened to notice today while under the van the ID tag on the rear axel, WCR-R1 3.50 6FB 782, which I was able to find on a Ford site as being a 3.50 9" NL used in the the econolines from 1963-1967. Interestingly all the ones my manual lsits as 8.75" this site has as 9".

    Hi Tim,
8.75 is more inline with what I've heard. 8.75,9,9.25 were differences in ring gear diameter depending on ratio. All are considered 9 inchers though.

In our Econolines, the 4.57 ratios had a 9" gear, whereas the 3.00, 3.50, and 4.11 had a 8.75" gear. The axle and gear housing is the same, and referred to as a 9" rear.

FYI. The small rear axle changed with the year:
    ‘61-‘64 used a 7” gear
    ‘65-‘67 used a 7.25” gear

    **This is incorrect. See below.

That's not really true Barnabas. The gear was matched to the engine. 7" was used with the 144 and the 7.25" was used with the 170.

Right you are Duane. I was incorrect on the light-duty axles.

I see you noticed that you mistyped the model number. I fixed it for you. You have a 3/4 ton van, which is between the regular van and the 1-ton HeavyDuty. In your case, they probably just put on better tires.

You also have the unusual TravelWagon pop-top camper in a cargo van. Not the usual Falcon or window van. Cool!
