Urgent windshield help Empty Urgent windshield help

Post by Fcat Sun Mar 22, 2020 5:22 am

Hey guys - hope everyone is coping with the virus related craziness Ok. We are supposed to all be observing Social distancing - no closer than 7 feet from the nearest human. But it does give me more time for van stuff.

So, I'm replacing my windshield - I have new screen and new gasket but I think I have watsed hours putting the gasket on the windshield the wrong way round!

There is a small lip on one side and a large lip tat curve back on itself to create a rounded profile - which side faces in?

    Thanks as always

Been awhile sine I did my 68, and I used a Chevy pickup (64-66 Stander(no trim)gasket(same one on my 64-66 Chevy vans) glass Guy on VCVC said it was the best(and what he uses) Think the thick side is on outside. need to go out & take pic to make sure. The corners are FUN especially the Last one

Thanks Savage - that seems to be right. Makes more sense when you start pulling the profile over the profile of the screen surround. I'm just stuck trying to get the top of the screen and top corners to push 'home' - will try a bit of warmth as its cold here.

Yea it helps if gasket is warm, most I have done in summer. Also lube the heck out of it(I used dish soap) you also will have to Work the gasket to move it to where it fits right. Are you using the rope in windshield  gasket to flip it into pinch weld around windshield opening Yea its Cold here in Indiana too about 24, but sunny .  If you need any more info ask.
Stay Safe .Its a Crazy world all of a sudden

Nope that's how it turned out (before re-seating the outside lip of the gasket) but it is the same as the old one.

Yes, good question - for my worst transaction so far, I paid nearly $250 including import tax etc. to ship a set of seatbelts but the screen was under the rear seat - with a new gasket!

Wow, And I thought it was bad trying to find parts here??
Not sure how it broke there ?? Corners are usually the weakest . when I did my 68 had it all in but upper drivers side. it was sticking Way out, didn't think I was going to get it in,(my Bro in law was helping , he just keep backing away from van) then it just popped in. (boy was I happy(I reused Old windshield)
Wish I could help you find a new one, & sneak it in, & give you a hand. Nice van hope you can it on road soon.

Hey Savage - screen is ok, that's just the packing foam that is taking some shifting! Took all my weight from the outside to get the top in.

Thanks for the airlift offer though Wink

Cool van, never seen a G20 - same as mine but a bit beefier underneath? - liking those wheels.

We are all on Lockdown as from tonight (like polite house arrest) so I'll do some more work on the van but no road trips for a while. Maybe get the electrics working properly and even get the speedo sorted.

I was wondering if(& hoping) that what was on your windshield. Very Happy
Yea the last corner is a lot of fun Shocked
G20 are the 3/4 ton Van they  have 6 lug wheels & bigger brakes(front drums & wheel cyl  are Not available anymore) also has more leaf's in spring packs. I like the 108 ride better than the 90,but 90 can turn on a dime.
Yea they just Locked down Indiana today. Stay Safe
