I purchased a 200 inline 6 presumably from a 1964 Fairlane, which I installed in my 61 Econo It has 5 freeze plugs. I decided to rebuild it for an upcoming trip from Pennsylvania to Colorado in June. I dropped the oil pan only to discover it only has 4 main caps. I thought it was supposed to have 7 main caps. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Re: Ford 200 inline 6 question ?
I dunno. My Epup has a 1969 Ford 200 "Falcon Six". That engine has 5 freeze plugs on the passenger's side and has 7 main caps. Not much help I'm afraid. I just know what mine has. Maybe someone smarter(that's most everyone) will chime in.

Re: Ford 200 inline 6 question ?
I believe some of the very early ford 200's only had 4 main bearing caps. 200 inch dissplacement, unforntunately, the weaker bottom end.

Interesting.... This goes against what the falcon performance handbook says. Would love to see some pictures as this is very odd

Re: Ford 200 inline 6 question ?
65 and up will have 5 freeze plugs and 7 main bearings. Totally possible with Ford that they would use a 4 main bearing lower end in the 64 model year. Ford never threw anything away. Check to see if you have a casting code of C5DE-H. That would identify it as a 65 and up engine block.

Re: Ford 200 inline 6 question ?
As stated, the earliest 200's had 4 main bearings. I suspect they used the 170 block pattern until they had the new pattern finalized to push the 200 into production. I doubt it was a case of using leftovers b/c the 170 was in production until 1972. A 200 is a stroked and bored 170 afterall. If the 200 you have has a 1/4" hex oil drive, you may be better off finding a 7 main block before throwing a bunch of $$ @ that one.

Re: Ford 200 inline 6 question ?
Yes I am searching for a 7 main block right now but haven't found one yet locally in Pa.I would rather put my money into something worthwhile. Thank you all for the feedback, the search goes on.
