Re: Overdrive a 170
T5's can be adapted to 170's but I don't know how you would shift it. Don't know about the B-W.
How about a 4 speed 3.03 toploader and a column and shift rods from a 4 on the tree Dagenham trans van? Also maybe the Tremec 170

The 4 speed doesnt really have the range im looking for as the 1st gear is taller than the econolines 3.4something... plus they dont have an overdrive

Re: Overdrive a 170
I have given this much thought over the years and concluded that either I use a cable set up destined to fail or stick with the conventional side shift trannies. mating an incorrect trans can be done with aftermarket bellhousings or drilling and tapping what is available. machining input shaft to fit or if your lucky, just a different pilot bushing. I have done just that installing a ford t-5 in my jag and would have the same in my van if I could find a reliable and affordable way to shift. you could go with a Richmond 5 or 6 speed but they start at over 3 grand and never come up for sale used.

Is there any way to get the ford butterfly pattern tremec 170 to bolt up to the 170 six narrow pattern bellhousing?

I don't know, there may be. The one with the OD gear was made for ford.

Re: Overdrive a 170
Have done several 4spd steering columns for people running an OD. The Dag box a weak pc of junk usually tied to a 4:00 rear axle and notorious for the dumb gearing pattern. Fords try at a heavy weight hauler and NOT meant for anything over 55 mph....
The OD trans I am thinking of can be adapted however it bolts up to a big six/v8 bell pattern as well as the input shaft and clutch being larger than the 170 clutch setup..
