5 speed trans in 64 E-100
[i]Hi folks, I'm new to this forum so if I make mistakes I'm sorry. Over the x-mas holiday, I finished getting all my parts together and installed a 5 speed trans in my 64 E-100 p/u. I made the bell housing adapter by cutting off the back edge of the 5 speed bell housing and welded it to a piece of aluminum plate, that bolts to the 3-speed bell housing. Then I made a cross member to hold the rear of the trans. I made a shifter stick out of the 1/2" (original) shift rod and a hyme joint mounted under the floor in front of the dog house. Under the truck, I have a shift rod going back to a shortened z-bar mounted vertically for the for/aft movement of the shifter on the trans. I made an 84" z-bar out of 3/4" pipe running down the passenger side of the engine, with a short "tie rod" conecting it to the stick shift and another conecting it to the trans shifter for the side to side movement. I then took the original drive shaft and cut it down to length and welded it to the front yoke from a mustang. I balanced it with two hose clamps. If someone can explain how to post pics, I will add some. Questions and coments are welcomed. Dan in SC

There are some forum posting tips at the start of the forums. Have a read on all that is there and if you still have trouble we will chime in. But for the most part it is well explained in there. Can't waite to see this shifter of yours, sounds kool. And welcome to VV.

Dan,
Did you happen to be the guy who I gave the seats to that came in my van (and a grille) a couple of years ago? I think his name was Dan too, and he had a '64 PU. Sounds like a cool conversion!

Yes Jeff, it is I. I only put the drivers seat in because I wanted to cover the other one first and have not found covers yet. I just posted pics so all can get an idea of what I am talking about.

Re: 5 speed trans in 64 E-100
Thanks Jeff. Jay in Ca. jokingly asked when the kits will be available. It got me thinking and I'm allready figuring out a way to simplify the hole linkage setup. I just might be able to offer a kit soon. I'm sure others out there will want more options than just the 3-speed or an automatic. Wish me luck. DAn in SC

Very inventive! I love the headlights, too!
I saw a PU with a v8 & T5 at a show in WI. The owner had hooked the shifter in the cabin to the trans in the bed through a series of u-joints like a semi. It was really slick and complicated looking. I wish I had taken a picture.

Re: 5 speed trans in 64 E-100
Would it be easier to adapt a cable shift of some sort? What you have looks more complicated when compared to a cable setup like a Fiero has.

Re: 5 speed trans in 64 E-100
A cable set-up would probably be better. They use them in euro cab over style trucks, but what I have was mwde out of stuff I had lying around except the tie rod ends which cost me about $10. In all I have $150 for the trans, $54 for the clutch disc, $20 for the mustang drive shaft, and $70 for a roll of welding wire which I needed anyway. I'm guessing a junkyard cable setup would be at least $200 alone. I know the bellhousing adapter is $200. What I have works pretty darn good for what I have in it. I'm not trying to be smart or anything, but I just did this to see if I could, and didn't want to spend a lot on an experiment. I am in the process of refining my design to make it less complicated. I will keep all informed on my progress. I,m hoping to make it easy enough to be able to offer kits. Dan in SC

It ain't pretty but as long as it works. I love it! You beat me to it but mine will be a little different. Way to go Dude!
I have a couple of Turbo buddies near you. I went down there 2 years ago to a party. Maybe we can get some East Coast Van action going.

Yea, I liked it too, but I used thread locker on it and it cracked in half when I tried to remove it.

Re: 5 speed trans in 64 E-100
Dan,
I know this an old post, but is there any progress on the 5 speed shifter "kit"? Just got me a '65 Epup and am very interested in installing a manual 5 speed. Also, your pictures didn't show up when I looked at it.
Thanks,
Jim from OK
