460 and overdrive in 65 E Van Empty 460 and overdrive in 65 E Van

Post by flyinlow Sat Jan 05, 2013 8:37 am

Hi I have just bought a 1965 Econoline van that is missing the engine and tranny but it had a 240 in it and has the 9" rear end.
I also have a low mileage Fuel injected 460 and overdrive tranny out of a 1997 f450 that I plan to install in the Van

I Have not brought the van home yet since we have about 2 feet of snow right now and it is in a friends back yard

Still have to get it home so I can take some measurements but would like to move the engine back a little for ballance but am concerned about room for a reasonable driveshaft length with the long transmission

I will log the build as I go and if anyone has done simillar conversions I would love to hear from You

Some may feel I am ruining a classic van but it is a rust free straight van that would have gone to the crusher if I didnt buy it

compared to fitting a fuel injected 5.0 and 5 speed into a triunph spitfire without cutting the bonnet (hood) the econoline is huge with tons of room.

I build one off custom cars and am used to fitting large engines into small cars usually sports cars but I really like the unusual and The econoline wil be for me, its just going to be a fun toy that has allot of room to put my company logo on and be a little bit different than the typical cars I build

The 460 and E4OD were purchased for another project that fell through and the van almost given to me so figured it would be a fun side project that will stand out from the crowd when finished

My motto is, too much is almost enough

I had the floor out of my pick up when I got it. No floor made it much easier doing the conversion. There is a lot of room in the cab once the dog house, seats etc are removed. I did a small block and had a custom drive shaft built..It was only like $300. Pretty cheap considering all the other money you WILL spend doing an 8cyl. Well worth the time and money!!!

Thats a sweet ride iambeninla !!
I realy like it and very unique, I am sure it is allot faster than mine will be since I will just be using a stock fuel injected 460 and 4 speed automatic but it should be adequate for street use and some towing as the truck my engine and tranny came out of had a 26,000 lb GCWR
Looking forward to seeing more pics and details of yours specially engine compartment.
