in looking @ pix = to me?? it appears someone used a surburban chassis & put the body on that?? could be a blazer? yet long wheelbase! Crossmember for trannys looks factory! whats the width of the springs front & rear? 2 & 1/2 or 3"??

To my ol;d knowledge -Gm did NOT build any 4 x 4 vans till after mid 70's. Ill correct myself here - never did build a 4 x 4 van -Factory-all were conversions -Ford did i do believe yet not GM.

Vin numbers were a little flakey for identifying options on vehicles until the NHTSA standardized all VIN numbers in 1981.

This looks like a chevy 4x4 Transfer case crossmember but look how the end is fastened onto the frame. It looks like it was butted up to the frame and welded into place. That's definitely not factory.

It looks like the end of the crosmember has been notched.

Isn't there a VIN number stamped into the metal somewhere around the engine cover on a 2nd gen van? Even if it is a home brewed 4x4 it looks like a decent job of it. That transfer case is a little old school but they were favored for a simple conversion. Stretching my memory but looks a lot like a New Process 203 all gear driven? They were easy to mount. It would not be completely unusual to find a little Title jumping happening on these old girls also.

I'll look for welds tomorrow and not sure what you mean about notching but I'll take a closer look at that to.

I could be wrong but the crossmember end looks notched to fit in the frame channel. I'm going to look at my van crossmember tomorrow.

I guess I could also take the interior out and look for the sticker.
Does anyone else have a tach in there gauge cluster?  I was told by a person that fixes speedometers thathhe's never seen one in a van

A tach could easily be installed in the middle. There's a spot, maybe there was an optional tach. The same gauge cluster was used in the P10-20-30 step vans which probably had an optional tach.

I checked my 1969 Chevy Truck Chassis Service Manual and did not find any indication of a tach in any models for 69.

JMO..It is a "Nice Looking" conversion "NO Doubt" But the factory would have not used a threaded rod for a support brace and the cross-member sure looks like one from a 4x4 pick up truck or suburban... It would have been riveted or bolted on by the factory and not welded in..I owned a 1978 G30 Pathfinder converted van for about 10 years and it had the same 203 transfer case as all the 4x4 Chevy trucks did along with other truck suspension parts at that time.. Smile ...                                                               https://imgur.com/AXNCiCeDecoding my vin - Page 2 105_0410                                        Also most all 4x4 1/2 ton Chevy trucks & suburbans & blazers had 2 leaf springs up front..Decoding my vin - Page 2 Chevy410In my opinion and by the looks of it someone parted out a older 4x4 suburban to build your van.. Smile .."BUT" I could be wrong.!!!..

That's a better picture. Definitely not factory. The crossmember would not be hanging below the frame like that. It looks like a pretty good conversion though.

The tach (if factory) would have the same number font and patina as the rest of the gauges. A good install though.
