Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
no clue on where to find a header... but I think we'd all love to see pics of your L4... really rare to see a van with the four in it.

working on the pics
anybody want to send me a personal email at thomditdat@insightbb.com
i know i can send pics by email
about the header , yep i know i would probaly have better luck having one custom made ,and way too expensive , i got another post wanted original exhaust manifold also. i understand they went in chevy 2's mostly in 65. basically its ok now ,but long term i could use either header or used stock manifold if one ever pops up affordable.
thanks for the reply

Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
From what I have searched, the 153ci 4 banger was a short run for GM then they sold the rights to mercruiser for awhile then it came back for Monzas and vegas maybe and was revised a little. Do a search for Iron Duke and see if that helps , but all I found was mostly talk of one off stuff like maybe getting a header flange and building your own from there? Could be a fun project if one wasn't ina hurry. Good luck.

Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
from what i understand, it is basically the 6 banger, minus 2 cylinders. pics i have seen have similar intake/exhaust manifold and i know the timing gear sets are the same. header flanges are available on e bay, maybe modify 6 cyl. headers? i have never seen or known anyone with a '60's chevy 4 cylinder. i have owned several iron dukes but that was 30 years ago.

looks like it/l be a header
the guy i bought van from says he got it last yr from orig owner ,who had it setting for a few yrs.he repainted it and freshened up stock brakes, gas lines and cleaned up stock interior (bare).my engine is in good shape ,just didnt clear answer on why the custom exhaust manifold he built for it. it works but i dont like the flow design he built .
anyway , i guess i/m gonna get a clifford header. talked to him yesterday .definatly available. wasnt looking for a four cylinder , not sure but it may be a rare model 65 g10 , and surprisingly its pepy ,and w/header and considering a head job , it could be a neat little piece.
again , not that great on computers ,but working on the time to send pics, that i have in computer.

Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
Really nice looking ride !!!!!!! I would love to have one with the 4cyl. in it. I think you might be the only one here with the 4cyl. Nice find.
It's hard to tell from the pic but is the exhaust manifold cast? Looks stock from what I can see.
Do I see a fan shroud too?

Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
Great looking van - just really nice - the 4 cyl is a 153 cube - 2.5 lit also ??? I do think as gm , mercruiser used the by the many 1000's too. just about bullett proof. In the boats we used to spin those 5800 rpm all day long. never saw one braek either. there is even now a valvecover / mercruiser one on ebay. Whats the tranny3 spd or what? Nice van & also one of a kind - Happy vannin

Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
wow, really nice van! So cool and unique to see the 4 cyl.
So can you possibly find a source for a new manifold for a mercruiser 2.5 inline 4?
Headers suck on anything but a dedicated race car anyways... so many problems. stock iron manifolds are way better!

Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
Nice looking van and thanks for posting. The "Iron Duke" term was a little over used as it originally, I believe, referred to to a V-8 that was cut down the middle by Pontiac and turned into a L-4. Later the term was used for our cut down from a 6 L-4 and then later used to differentiate post Vega 4 cylinder melt down engines. And, I think they made a cast iron (per the original blue print) version of the ill fated Vega/Monza/Starfire and called it an "Iron Duke" in hope of reviving the horrible Vega engine reputation.
Thanks again, Mark

I believe, referred to to a V-8 that was cut down the middle by Pontiac and turned into a L-4. i have seen one of these 30 years ago. cant remember what it was in but he had a v8 alum valve cover and 1 header from an 8. i thought it was a chevy motor but could of been pontiac. the 4 cylinder in the pic is not the same. it is a 6 with 2 cylinders loped off. if its 1 off each end, maybe headers would work by removing the un needed pipes?

Re: header for 65 4 cylinder ?
the pontiac slant 4 was half of their 326,
the later iron duke was a name that pontiac put on
the 2.5 that was used in the sunbird, monza, and later in
the citation and other front wheel drive gm cars.
the iron duke was to make sure that the public knew it
was not the same pos that chevy used in the vega.
jeep used a version of the iron duke in their wranglers until just recently. the iron duke was 151 cubic inches.
I haven`t ever seen one of the early 153s in person,
would be interesting to see just how it is laid out.

these guys do chevy L6 engines and HP parts for that racing crowd, but they might be able to conect you up with a 4 cylinder parts source.

getting back to questions on it...
checked w/ stovebolt ,he doesnt deal w/ four bangers. the merc cruiser exhaust manifolds design doesnt look at workable to me . it looks like (even though i/m staying stock) i will be buying a clifford header, and whenever a orig. stock exhaust pops up grab it. the one on it now is a fairly good (but not effecient looking enough)home made header that only has been recently made for it ,other than that and the fuel pick up he made for gas tank he had to replace ,maybe need to replace that if one comes available . he did make the mirrors ,other than that he did a brake job all around , fuel lines , carb w/ auto choke , paint job .it is a 3 speed . after good friend took a through look at it maybe a head job is in the future ,since theres a little bit of oil spits out of tail pipe when cold ,thinking seals , but if so why not jerk the head off and redo it ,when money comes to do it.
the weirdest thing i found so far is the tires , the size is crazy .they look very small for 15"s ,their 195R15 ,but there new so i guess they might be used up before i get the cash to go taller . it still has good ride.
also looking for one rear inside door handle

I wouldn't be suprised if that van came originally with 13" tires if that 4 banger is stock.

so much for 4 cylinder unique factor
it runs but needs at least a head job, based on more dependable and less scarce parts ,thinking very serious on buying a 230 pulled out of a running 63 (impala i think?) , and take it to a friend swap out the four banger . i think the swap should be clean , the 230 it has flywheel, carb exhaust manifold ,starter ,etc.,,looks ready to go.
