The electric fan from the Camaro was too big. I liked it because it had a shroud. The other one that I thought was so small turns out to be a pretty good fit. And it is quieter than the big one and I'd say it moves more air too. I didn't take note of what it came out of but it was a pretty new GM with two of these fans side by side. No shroud. Here's a photo of how it fits:

The Blue No Door - Page 2 Dscn0411

I test fit it in my blue van and it ended up perfectly aligned in front of the radiator, about 1/2" away from it. This photo shows it in my other van so you can see how it mounts. The two upper bolts will be easy, into the doghouse, but I need to fashion a couple of clever mounts to go onto the sway bar. Each needs to to provide a slot for a plastic tab to go into.

My only concern is, will the fan block incoming air when it the fan is off. It's got that wide "ring" around it. And it's a pretty tight space between the radiator and the front of the doghouse, as we all know. But if I hook it up to a thermostatically controlled circuit, it will come on when it gets hot, so it should help more than it hurts. Plus I want to add a switch on a timer that will cause the fan to run for a while after I park, to blow out those nasty fumes that collect after a long drive. That's an idea I got from Donivan65. Works like a charm!

My van, when I got it, didn't have the bottom pan that I think helps direct air up to the radiator. From what I understand it is common that these pans were taken off and not put back since they were a hinderance to oil changes etc. I am wondering do you guys still have a pan on your beasts?
Do you think they help or hurt or don't matter in terms of cooling and will the added electric fans compenstate for not having one if the pans do help keep the motor cool?

They changed the cooling systems on the 2nd Gens. On the 1st Gens, the radiator goes nowhere,,,the only air that it got was from the bellypan shooting it up from the ground,,,,while you were moving. But then. on the 2nd Gens, the Doghouse got bigger and they built a tunnel in the floor so the air from the grille actually hit the radiator. and they put crossflow radiators that mounted on their sides with a surge tank that got more air flow. But I would say,,,,a bellypan adds more cooling air to the radiator when going down the road.

So Don I know you posted this before, but what kind & where did you mount the "extra" fan you put on your van for cool down after driving it. Does it come on if it starts to over heat???

Hey Tom, We keep getting new members so we need to keep reposting the old stuff that we covered before.
I don't like the idea of putting a fan right in front of the radiator on a 1st Gen. the air has to come UP from the Bellypan so that might be restricting the airflow. But it might work if you wired the fan with a sending unit to come on automatically.
But my set up is to just mount a Honda fan on the sway bar and floor with a wind up timer and a switch under the dash. If I am going up a mountain or stuck in traffic or just want to cool down the engine, I turn it on. And I can just crank on 15 minutes on the timer and leave the van to cool off by itself and shut off. I drove the van in 109 degree weather last week and it did not overheat. I sure did,,,,But the vans need to be moving for the bellypan to force that air up through the radiator. Its a small fan, I might try a larger one there.

Don, Your fan also gets rid of the gas fumes too after turning the engin off too? That smell of gas is a major turn off for my wife so I will need to do something about it to get her back in my beast once the upgrades are done and it is back on the road. I am tempted by these fan you guys are showing and hooking it up with a temperature controlled switch.

That was the original reason that I put the fan in there,,,,,it was my Hamburger fan,,,,,The carb is vented into the doghouse and when the engine is hot, you smell that gas vaporizing from the heat. But I turn on that fan and it blows the fumes out of the doghouse and cools the engine off,,,the engine will start because it is not flooded out and won't leave a big cloud of black smoke when it starts. It also keeps the Doghouse cool,,,,,Sometimes I have to pull the choke out to start the engine if I leave the fan on too long and it gets too cold,,,,I wouldn't leave home without it.

Nice of you to allow us all to experience this reunion through your videos. All they needed was that sappy "Reunited" song for background music to make the moment complete! Then it would have really brought a tear to my eye! Well, maybe save that for the shot of him driving it home.

The bracket is original but the rectangular mirror heads are not,,,,,I put those on so I could back that cave van up without hitting anything,,,,,,the originals are about a 5" round type with those brackets. And if you want to see mirrors,,,,,look at what we use,,,,,,,,,
