    5.0 V8 Engine swap ? Empty 5.0 V8 Engine swap ?

Post by Linoman Mon Aug 08, 2011 1:03 pm

I have a line on a fuel injected 5.0 v8 out of a 88 mustang complete throttle body to oil pan with computer & all, will this fit in my econo relatively easily? Right now I have the stock 240 & was thinking of going with a Clifford set up of intake, headers, new card, electronic ignition, etc. probably would set me back $1000 - 1200. I can get this 5.0 for around $600. Thoughts ?

Stick with your first choice. It will be a great running motor.

    I think it's a tough call.

240 will run forever, though it may be tired now. It is simpler if you are comfortable working with carb'd engines.

F.I. 5.0L out of an 88 Mustang... definite advantages to that. Only question is do you want to deal with a computer? Price is right. If you are inclined to go this way, try to make a deal where the guy can assure you the engine is good. If it doesn't work out, you can still stick with the 240.

    Good luck.

Well I am very partial to the V8's and the 302 is a very easy swap. I wouldnt consider the FI so count on needing a intake, carb, dist, pulleys, water pump and some other odds and ends. Will cost you a bit in the long run but you just cant beat a sbf.

Plan on a better radiator $250.00+, new drive shaft, around $300.00, electric fan, altering the floor of the van a bit, and I would not depend on the 40+ year old wiring with the upgraded motor, alternator etc so another $350.00+ for a wiring harness and then labor to instal everything. You are looking at a couple of thousand if you do your own work and twice that if you don't. Plus your motor won' have the torque, milage or HP a built up 240 will have. I did a V8 swap and there were to many mods and new parts to buy. My swap cost over $5,000.00 when it was all said and done but I did put in a new 347 stroker which only got 4 MPG. I am having Clifford build my 240 and it will have 385 pounds of torque and over 225 HP, Stock 302s get about 185 HP and less torque too. You will be very happy with the 240 after it is done guaranteed.

Yes, he will definitely need to upgrade the rad and fan and consider the costs to have a drive shaft made. The built big six like you mentioned is an option, certainly not an option for me. What is the total cost on the clifford built 240? I also think you are a little low on the hp rating on the 302, some of the Mustang 5's are rated at 225 stock. With minimal cost its easy to 280 - 300 on a sbf, and lets not forget the sound, cant beat that. Very Happy

For the parts he wants around $1100.00. The last time I checked most 302s came stock with 185HP. The kit I bought from Clifford included cam, over sized pistons, rods, bearings, roller rockers, rings valves, valve guides etc. and cost me $1100.00 but then I bought their headers and had them jet hot coated and added a new Offenhauser intake and Eldebrock 500 4 barrel carb and Mallory Unilite distributor, Mallory 60,000 v coil, Mallory ignition box, Livewire 10mm spark plug cables, New aluminum four core radiator, new water pump, electric fuel pump, fuel regulator, cold air intake , new flex fan, new 3000cfm electric fan, , new overflow tank(aluminum), new C4 trans, new bell housing, new torque convertor, new trans cooler and had several parts powder coated and a rebuilt 9" 3:50 rear end and new disc brakes on the rear. Still need to get the front disc brakes and MC from Dennis so I have a little over $4200.00 in the drive train not counting the labor to rebuild the 240 with cylinders bored 60 over, head milled .060 , ported and polished, balanced and honed and planed which will cost another $1100.00.

As far as the sound is concerned do you mean something like this: 5.0 V8 Engine swap ? Th_MVI_0425 That is a clifford 200 ci motor in my 65. The 240 will sound even better. Put it against the 347 stroker in Vanish Breed and there isn't much difference.

Well, since you put it that way... lol! Mind you wiring and alternator are recommended regardless on engine choice.

That's what I love about this site, you ask for thoughts and there is no lack of them. Thanks all! You've really help clarify my thought process. I'm leaning towards just sticking with my 240, mostly for its shear simplicity, and that I can spread out the cost of upgrades a little.
