    240 TO 300 SWAP Empty 240 TO 300 SWAP

Post by joe cool Sun Apr 22, 2012 1:12 pm

I'm replacing my 240 engine in my 67 van with an 81 model 300 and want to know what external parts I should use from my original 240, (water pump, pulleys, fan etc?) Is there room to run the 81 model clutch fan set up?
Had to swap 240 oil pan onto the 300 to clear crossmember. 300 engine has the dipstick located further back on the block, but has another insert spot where the 240 dipstick was. Can this be knocked out and the 240 stick inserted there?
Also, can the downward facing oil filter housing be put onto the 300 block?
Who makes headers for a 67 van chassis? A contact would be helpful!

There are a lot of detailed threads on this, mostly on the Ford Truck forums. In short, new parts will be better than used parts. With a 6 in the doghouse there is not a lot of clearance behind the radiator unless you do something custom. The oil filter adapter can be put in the block, you will have to take the flare adapter out of it first and be sure you have a good gasket on the mating surface AND where the bolt meets the adapter. Headers for the 240/300 are limited to Hooker Headers or Clifford as far as I know.

I'm planning on swapping in a 300 latter this year, I have a chance to get a 1995 FI 300, will the Fuel Injected version fit in the dog house? I'll have the whole f150 it's coming from so I wouldn't have to hunt for any necessary components. Anyone done this?

240 TO 300 SWAP Empty Hooker headers for 240?300

Post by joe cool Wed Apr 25, 2012 12:58 pm

I have a set of Hooker Super Competition headers that came with the engine I bought. They "WILL NOT" fit our vans and truck chassis. First set of 3 tubes hit engine crossmember and wont allow it to be lowered down to engine mounts. Anyone with an F150 need a good used set? Who makes headers for the Econolines with a big six in it?

240 TO 300 SWAP Empty 300 Engine Swap

Post by Guest Mon May 14, 2012 9:02 pm

I swapped a 77 300 into mine ... that dip stick hole ahead of the dizzy is just a cap ... when you drop the pan get a punch and drive it up OR get a punch and drive it down ... then relocate your dipstick. I couldn't remove and re-use the tube though that comes out of the block ... but lo and behold ... I noticed that a chrome plated copper toilet valve supply pipe was the exact diameter I needed ... cut it to length and popped it in ... had to swap alternator sides using old econo bracket and had to install a shorter tube on the water pump as the longer one would have created a hard 90 if not a hose pinch ... changed out the oil pump and pan to an econoline so I could accommodate the cross member ...

I thought my 240 to 300 swap was very easy.
Aside from relocating the dipstick and using the 240 oil pan, the only thing I could think of was the oil filter clearance. I just cut the floor out a bit and made a tiny homemade cover for the dog house so I could remove the oil filter. Everthing fit otherwise. It was the AC install where I put the compressor on the passenger side that was more of a problem. As a note....I've seen a few guys on VV's use a chevy doghouse. It is much larger at the base and much taller. I'm going to ask the question as a post.

you could use an oil filter relocation kit. has an adapter that screws on block and hoses to mount filter wherever you want. makes it easy to add a cooler at the same time. there is no way i would buy headers and run them into a y pipe. i have headers on my chevy 6 and run duals ouy the back.

    240 TO 300 SWAP Empty 240 T0 300 SWAP

Post by joe cool Tue May 15, 2012 1:07 pm

Thanks for the input about relocating the dipstick to the front of the block. As far the Clifford shorty headers, is anybody currently running a set? I'd run duals for sure. Have set of Hooker headers for a 300 that could be made to fit, but are too good to cut up. Gonna try to sell them and probably get the Clifford's. Haven't decided which way to go on the oil filter yet, but good to know I have are a few options.

240 TO 300 SWAP Empty Oil Filter

Post by Guest Tue May 15, 2012 5:12 pm

To be honest on my 300 I just switched to a lower profile filter ... done deal, no mucking about with cutting the crate ... no 90 degree whatever ... spins to the block ... can't have it easier than that ... easy to access and spin off ... my swpervan with the original 240 has the 90 ... works both ways ... I agree with the bigger GM doghouse but a 67 econo has a special bump out on the passenger side of the doghouse that accommodated a smog air pump ... not saying that will help with the AC compressor as I have no experience but at least it MIGHT ... and look stock as well

Located an unobtanium edelbrock intake as well ... it fits tight in th edoghouse ... if you have an automatic transmission ... be prepared to do a bender job on the dipstick tube to be able to grab the stick without getting burned ... or wear gloves ... don't ask how I know these things ... old saying " a wise man learns from the mistakes of others ... a fool learns from his own." I might admit to being the latter half of that quote ... lol!

Post by Old Skool Fri May 18, 2012 8:22 am

The two engines are identical externally. Any and all the other 240 parts are a direct bolt on, other than the 300 has a three belt dampener and uses a crank bolt.
The oil filter adapters (90 degree) will go in either block by removing your 240 block adapter and installing it in your 300. Use an easy out to remove your adapter from your 240 block, or a lock nut using the adapter bolt.
The plug for the dip stick tube hole is a standard freeze plug type plug. When removing your old dipstick tube use anything that is round and fits snugly inside the end of the tube, and carefully use a pair of pliers or vice grips to carefully twist the tube and remove it from the block so that you can install it in the 300 block. Much the same idea as using a socket to remove head gasket alignment rings for head gaskets.
In order to use the crankshaft dampener bolt, simply install a 1/2" fan spacer if you want to use the 300 dampener bolt.
The oil filter adapter does make everything easier and also no oil to spill when you change it, and certainly much easier than cutting the floor for clearance.
ALSO,, for those that do not realize it, the housing itself has TWO o-rings in it,and those should be replaced also.
The OEM fiber type seal on the bolt breaks very easily so I use a copper oil pan drain plug seal. ANYONE needing a 90 degree adapter I have a box full of them here.
