the 1966 radiator blues Empty the 1966 radiator blues

Post by thetommy Tue Oct 26, 2010 12:22 am

my old radiators days are numbered. it's been patched many times and man, i just need a new one. any places to order one? or perhaps one that will fit with minor mods?
OR am i faced with pulling it out to be rebuilt? i'd rather not do that as i drive it almost every day and i fear it might be pricey.
i live in las vegas. any comments would be of help. thanks

I had the same problem. I found a place that just happened to have one that fit. Lucky break so not sure what to tell ya. I would suggest looking for A100s in junkyards though, in Seguin Texas theres a place called Johns Auto Salvage and they have tons of A100s and a few still have radiators in them, not sure how well off they are though. They have a website, look em up. Glad to see another Sportsman owner on here! Mines a '65.

#1 rule in my van book is have a good heavy duty radiator in a van,,,,,,especially in hot areas,,,,,,,you are asking for trouble if you have anything less,,,,,,,and how good are used radiators,,,,,,,you could always go to a wrecking yard and get something with the correct hose connections to put in temporarily to keep you on the road until you get a nice 3 row of tubes core and have your tanks transferred to it. That radiator is probably the most important thing on a van. See what a radiator shop wants for a recore job,,,,,,maybe $200 to $300?

ok cool thanks for the info!
here is an update: donivan, i could not agree more as i live in the frickin desert! in fact, i added a small extra radiator to assist. got it from jc whitney and mounted it up front.

anyway, basiccarparts.com i talked to some folks there they said they found one 'that would fit' in 'excellent' condition and i had it shipped to me...was 150 bucks total.
i got it and it is in great shape, however the mounting 'wings' on the sides of the radiator are a bit wider than my original one, but i believe i can simply cut them down, drill new holes for the bolts and it looks like it will fit. i have not removed the original yet - but i will soon.
perhaps then i can look into getting the original rebuilt properly...
let u know if it works out

In ChevyLand, the 1st Gen Sportvans use an inch wider radiator than the panels by bending the radiator flange back so it faces the sides instead of front and bolt it to the doghouse sides instead of the core support,,,,,

the 1966 radiator blues Empty An update about a100 radiators!

Post by thetommy Sat Nov 20, 2010 8:27 pm

hello - i figured i would post a follow up. i managed to remedy my radiator problem with a replacement.. it was not an exact of the original however with a little cutting -it worked out great!
maybe someone can look up these part numbers??
    my original 1966 225 radiator was stamped with these numbers: 2239563 and 18398 (from a 66 a100 sportsman, 225, 3speed)
the like new condition radiator i found was stamped with these numbers: 2907586 and 38086 (anyone know what type of dodge this is from??)

the new radiator had larger mounting 'wings' than the original.. so i made a jig from cardboard and cut them to the correct size (picture is new radiator with the cut off pieces)

there is VERY little room so the mounting 'wings' have to just the right width and shape.
also, the top spout on the new radiator was slightly more towards the passenger side - so i had to enlarge the existing hole in the yoke frame. AND because of the removal of the wings..i had to drill 2 new lower mounting holes in the yoke frame. Note: the top mounting holes worked fine.
this picture is the yoke frame removed, with the new radiator mounted..you can see the original lower mounting hole and the new one as well:

How many rows of tubes do those 2 radiators have? It would help out the cause if you took that old radiator to a couple of shops and see if they could find a core, preferably a 3 row, and how much it would cost. It would be good if you got the core # also.

YES DO NOT SCRAP THAT RAD!!! Get it rebuilt! Any good rad shop can make a 3 or 4 row out of it and living in the southwest it will keep the engine happy!

They were at least 3 diffrent radiator tanks on A100s v8s, slant6 one version was top tank inlet hose toward the right another was center of rad. then there is auto/standard tranny. I allways run a seperate cooler for automatics in everything I own. I just dont like the idia of heating the oil more in a radiator scratch
