How do you torque this bolt? Empty How do you torque this bolt?

Post by Scott Tue Oct 19, 2010 1:49 pm

I pulled the Carb off and torqued every manifold bolt but this one. My 250 rebuild book said to torque them all to 20 LBS, then torque all except the outside two up to 30 LBS. This one where the arrow points is to close to the manifold to wrap a socket around it, there isn't enough room for a open or closed end wrench. I cut a notch out of an open end and got it around the bolt, but now it spreads and slips.

Is there a secret, or is this just something I gotta figure out because of the Exhaust Manifold I'm using?

It probably don't matter how many times you torque it,,,,,,it's always going to work loose,,,,,,how about a crowsfoot socket,,,,,,,,I would just tighten it with a open end,,,,,,,,using a torqued one as a sample as to how much pressure to exert on the open end,,,,,,,,

The Crows-foot is the best bet I've seen so far, I haven't thought of that, and will have to get one. The plain open ends that I have are too wide, but what your showing here is curved in a little on the sides.

    Thanks Don

The quick and dirty answer, grind a crowsfoot to fit and give it the same oomph as the others as mentioned.
The crazy, involved and long-term answer is to remove both manifolds and grind them for clearance for at least a closed end wrench. Oh, and be careful of grinding through!!!

Snap on makes 3" torque wrench extentions that have a thin walled closed end of the size you need.
I wnd up grinding and cutting tools to fit all the time.

How do you torque this bolt? Empty carb Torque?????????

Why even worry about torqueing the carb?/ just tighten the bolts - gasket will crush anyway & will loosen up after some use . Just tightn them evenly. Like we all torque all the lug nuts after we change the wheels / tires??

How do you torque this bolt? Empty carb Torque? Try Intake / Exhaust Torque

There's one bolt that I can't get a socket around. Like RodStRace said, the long term answer is to pull the manifold and grind a little room in there. For now I am going to leave it, I'll pull the manifolds if it becomes a problem.
