I have a line on three different 300 ci engines for my planned swap out of the 170. one seller is concerned that it won't mate with the manual trans from the 240 equipped econoline.

"how many bolts on the bell housing-5? or 6. 1964 small block Ford 289 had 5 bolt bell-housing that changed to 6 after 65-66. Your bell-housing may not bolt up to a newer 300L6 and your 240 flywheel may not be the right balance for the 300L6."

I have this fear of buying an engine I can't use, or a trans I can't use.

he also has a c6 but he wants 1200 for both ($650 for just the engine, supposedly a recently rebuild and new 1968 distributor wires etc)

I've found other "good strong running" 300 ci engines from $250 to $400 (the $400 is a 79 and claims to have a recently rebuilt head)

Hi-IM my honest opnion- #1 guy is way too high on the tranny!! If u look good you can get a core for around 100 and it takes a kit to rebuild it for around another 100 bucks.Call the yards around new braunfels / san marcos - will be cheaper than austin.

there are definitely cheaper c6 around, but I'm not wanting to go w/ the c6 at all. I'm wanting a manual from a 240 econoline.

From what I understand, the 240 and 300 blocks are virtually identical. Hope you find what you need soon!

You don't mention how many bolts your trans of choice has at the bellhousing.
I don't know about I6s, this is for the V8s.

Further searches came up with a site you might want to look through.
This particular thread shows 300 trans work.

and probably more info than you want (until you get stuck and need to ID that greasy part for sale)...

    RodStRace,

I am in the planning stage for a 300 big six. I don;'t yet have the engine or trans. I've traded a few pm w tim-econoparts and he said he had a trans for me, but I'm not getting anything back from him lately.

I just don't want to back myself into a corner by buying something that will make the rest of my puzzle complicated.

the two trannys I have are both for a 240 and should work with your 300. If you can't find one closer then let me know. You can have one for $50.00 plus shipping. They are in Oregon right now but I should have them here by the end of this month.

    just dropped in a 300 from an 82 F150...to replace my 240
.a few mods had to be made, but real simple......
save your oil pan ,carb and manifold setup from your 240....
distributor and oil pump....coil, starter, solonoid alt etc on trhe electrical parts.
You'll need to switch them out on your 300

The 240 and the 300 motors are identical in regards to bolting things up like bell housing patterns, flywheels, water pumps, exhaust and intake manifolds, valve covers, oil pans, motor mounts, etc. I suspect your questioning the 5 bolt bell housing pattern is a throw back from the early 289 five bolt bell housing pattern, as the "big six" and the later small block Windsor bell housing patterns are identical. The 221,289,302 and the 351W are all commonly referred to as Windsor blocks, and there was no such thing as a five bolt bell pattern for the big sixes so it doesn't affect your swap anyways.
The 240 bellhousing, flywheel, pilot bearing, clutch, will interchange back and forth with absolutely no problems. The only major difference that you may run into would be the spread on the carburetor mounting studs. Some carbs using slotted holes in the base in order to mount on either manifold. But if you have a complete motor going in it won't matter to you anyways. Of course also, if you are using a fuelly motor with no fuel pump boss then you would simply use an electric fuel pump. The 300 carburetor has a larger diameter throat, and uses a different air cleaner
In order to use a 300 air cleaner on a 240 in order to get the paper filter and a fresh air intake on it, you need to weld on the stock 240 air cleaner venturi onto the 300 air cleaner, I have done several for people that way also.

In regards to a C6 versus a C4, the biggest problem you are going to have is that there is NO tail stock with the stock Econoline overhead transmission mount.(pic 1222) If you wanted to use a C6 you would have to use an under tranny cross member and mount. (pic 1190) I make and sell them, and also sell a replacement short solid yoke tail stock to get rid of the long car type tail stock.

I didn't see what yr truck you are converting, however, it sounds like a late, so you will need to swap your 170 engine cross member over to a 240 cross member. Also, you will need a 240 gas pedal setup and radiator, belly pans are also different.

Also, important is that unless you have an H/D you will need to swap out that small rear axle to an Econoline 9"er, or you will twist the little one up for sure.
