I have already addressed this lil question, but thought I'd make it it's own topic in case any other newbies were curious and needed more info too....

but i measured the distance from the top lip of the carb to the lid, now you have to subtract about 2" of foam and the X bracket that hangs from the lid of the housing.

so looks like my cleaner can only be about 3" tall....does this seem too small?

    what are you guys running?

    thanks!

My stock one has 4 threads through the king nut and with the cover it is about 2 3/4" on your tape. Unless you are planning on someone sitting on the dog house 2" foam is over kill. If you have a scrap piece of foil backed foam I'd try it first to see how it will handle the heat by the exhaust manifolds. I went with the thermotec so I still have room for headers when my Y-pipe rusts out. The muffler shop wanted $300. to custom make me one and I can get headers a lot cheaper than that.

stock type air cleaner for your carb drops down around the carb to give a bit more room. any 318 air cleaner for a carter bbd carb should fit. i would look into checking the fuel inlet of your carb cause your pics show a lot of fuel leakage. there should be a copper washer at the fitting that does require frequent tightning and or replacement in your case.

I found this one at Napa and it's a good fit, but I hope it's not too small to choke the carb!!

I've fired the van up a couple of times after it's been sitting a few days and it seems I have to lift this air cleaner off to get the van to fire!? Is this cleaner too small? Could it be choking the carb?

this was not a fun project but I finally made it work! I used napa for the air cleaner, the mounting plate for it to rest on and the hose from the valve cover. Now all I needed was a spacer to lift the air cleaner away from the vaccuum but not too high, to hinder closing the lid! Found a spacer for a turbo booster (?) on a new car that was the right diameter at Oreilleys. (item 8147 $5.99) I had to cut it down to about 3/4" tall, but seems to work!
