was very helpful in taking the temp and noise down around the housing...

I'm curious, how do you apply this stuff to the interior of the housing? There's not much clearance at all between the valve covers and the wall! Not to mention, where does an air cleaner sit? There seems to be little clearance for much!

I sure your doghouse comes apart unlike Chevy's, I would take it apart and do it in sections

your picture shows it already has the original insulation in place.
This must be removed and the new insulation installed.
It's held in place with the bolts you can see on the back wall and a bunch of tabs that are spot welded on the inside. These also had a round cardboard type washer to spread the load.

aha, I see, that makes sense.

is it alright if the insulation makes contact at some points with the block?

does anyone know of a small, really flat air cleaner that would fit this 318?

the air filter is so the engine can breathe clean air. Small is not good.
Do NOT use those flat triangle ones, they starve the engine and burn!
Try to find a stock one or go with the biggest aftermarket one that will fit.
Most aftermarket ones are for Holley 4 barrel carb tops which are bigger. You will need to find or fabricate a spacer for them to fit.

If you get the thermotec one can of their spray glue will do the 2-sides, top, and back panel. You might get lucky and find one in a junk yard. Where are you in texas?? I used to live in Killeen and temple.

Last night, I lined my Econoline doghouse lid with household hot water tank wrap (a foam double-sided with foil). I'm not certain that the cabin noise was unbearable, but there was defiinitely a big difference in the radiant heat through the lid compared to the ratty pink fiberglass insulation I removed.

I used NO adhesive... The Econoline doghouse has some plates inside that hold the insulation in place. I actually think that I may drill holes in my doghouse, and use round slotted machine screws and nuts to hold strips of sheet metal or large fender washers over my insulation! It would be nice if I could get away with a zero-adhesive install!!! Anyway, see if this is feasible for your project!

I'm going to be buying a lot of this wrap!!!

There was a place just off of I-35 south of dallas that you could see from the road that had a lot of old car. Check the yellow pages and call around for an old 2 bbl 318 air cleaner. I asked the same thing about a year ago in the Between The Seats 'A' column under '68 318 air cleaner. Some of the guys offered some up then.

Another thumbs up for them, if you can't find the air cleaner locally.

No, but I'm running a Ford Big Six, not a V block... I think that even after I line the passenger side, I should still have a couple inches between the exhaust manifold and the insulation. I was planning on continuing the project tonight... bought some stovebolts and fender washers. I'll take some pics though and post soon.

let me ask too, I've seen some folks paint their housing, etc.
would there be danger in covering it in carpet? or is it best to leave it bare metal? just brainstorming....

check out the pics vanishingbreed has of the upholstery on his doghouse. You can do anything you want as long as you remember to check that you can still use your lid prop and it is still comfortable to sit in the seat next to it.

    Success.

    1) trim out a pattern against the panel, and secure the joints with aluminum (?) tape to get the pattern to hold it's shape.

    2) attach the insulation by making pilot holes through the insulation in the applicable locations from the panel. No adhesives are required, though fender washers will prevent tears.

The only contact points are the carb and rad hose.

Update: I was driving around extensively yesterday, and had a problem overheating... my fan shroud is broken and I'm making a new one. Anyway, this was tested. I am finding that the doghouse is getting much hotter than I anticipated. Maybe it's because I didn't seal up the edges of my insulation, but it may also be that the hot water tank stuff isn't up to the task. This stuff may be okay for lining the interior, but I may consider looking for some purpose-built stuff (foil-backed jute fibre insulation?) for the doghouse.
