Hey Don, where did you get your shield, and do you wish you had something else?

Did you move your Voltage Regulator, or is that the stock location for 1st Gens?

I put that in a long time ago,,,,its like bubble wrap inside from A/C ducting from Home Depot,,,,,,glued on,,,,,works great,,,,has not burned up either,,,,,I got some stuff off Ebay for the doors,,,something like Corvette Sound deadening,,,,a big roll,,,,I will see if i can find it,,,,VanAgain's stuff is expensive,,,,Hot Rod stuff,,,,,,and thats where a 1st Gen Regulator lives,,,,,,until it acts up,,,,then the van goes to an 80's internal regulated alternator and that is going to turn into a blank spot,,,,,,

I thought the Home Depot stuff would work! I'm glad that you have a prooven concept!!! I'm going to HD on payday! In Canada, it's like $25 a huge roll (4'X25' if I remember), so I figure 3 rolls would do a van!

Great news too... I hope it will help keep the Canadian winter outside as well! I KNEW that stuff would be good for this! My brother will probably use it in the Fargo A100 too - a joint project when we have both our vans in the garage this winter!

What did you guys use to apply it? I'm thinking construction adhesive like they use on vinyl tub surrounds, and run vertical beads on the walls and stuff so water doesn't get trapped... thoughts?

    Boy, that's nice!

The Ford doghouse has like pins and big discs that also support the insulation... I would probably use a combination... use the adhesive, and then attach the retaining discs too.

I used indoor/outdoor carpet glue. A bit messy, but has held up, even went through a flood and still holding.

You can read more here about my van's doghouse insulation.

From what I've read about sound deadening, the main thing is to add mass to the wall. Makes it more difficult for the sound waves to resonate(?) thru the metal. That's why I went with the thick foam. And I presume it's better to have the adhesive spread evenly across the surface, not just in strips, so none of the metal is free to vibrate.

The foil on my foam is very thin but hopefully it will reflect the heat too.

I plan to mount the thinner 1/4" stuff on all the sheet metal in the van: doors, walls, ceiling, floor (unless I put good old plywood down in the back). They always do it on these car shows on TV to reduce the tinny sound and road noise.

I'm sure Dynamat is really great, with the super adhesive already on it. But that stuff is pricey! Especially when you're trying to cover the whole inside of a van!! Hmm, their DynaDeck might be just the thing for the front floor of our vans, looks a lot like the stock vinyl mat, but more soundproof. Only $170 for 3 feet by 56"!

I just ran across this web page. Got the adhesive already on it:
    http://www.soundprooffoam.com/automotive-sound-dampening.html
They mention a "hot roof smell" that can come from using "lightweight asphalt roofing material". Don't want that!

I'm hunting for some heat shield this weekend, probably see what I can find at the local Home Depot, or Lowes..

Really don't want to spend a fortune, but want it to work and last.

When instaling insulation on the inside walls of the van is there any thought of Condensation ?

I want to put something up but don't want to create a rust problem.

Im planning on insulating my DH soon. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on applying adhesive with the motor in place. Seems like it might be difficult and messy using a spray adhesive with the motor in the way.
Anyone have any luck with a brush-on type? Maybe like an outdoor carpet adhesive?

    Thanks!

I sprayed my dog house inside and out with Body Armor which is a sound and heat insulator. Then cover the inside and out with FatMat.

ebay. here is the 5 gallon bucket I used. I sprayed three coats on the bed of my pickup, three on the entire interior minus the dash and doors but did spray inside the doors and three coats on the inside and outside of the dog house and still have over 2 gallons left. It has no odor which is a plus and can be sprayed or applied with a brush http://cgi.ebay.com/5-Fatmat-Liquid-Sound-Deadener-Gravel-guard-Rust-shield-?cmd=ViewItem&hash=item3f07153483&item=270701769859&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0#ht_5402wt_1248

Heat Shield and Insulation Empty Re: Heat Shield and Insulation

Post by slowleak Tue Oct 18, 2011 5:45 pm

I don't know if this will help, but here's what I did:

I got the water heater insulation from Home Depot, looks like this:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000DZKW4G/practgreen-20

others suggested it and it works well. Gotta get the one with foil backing NOT the vinyl.

I have no faith in spray adhesive, and it's damn toxic. Others like it: cool. Just not for me. I've used it on many surfaces and heat is not its friend. And you have to clean so much before you apply it. That said, I did strip and repaint the interior of the doghouse lid before doing this....

So to fasten the insulation to the inside of the doghouse I took a corner bead for drywall (its got tons of holes in it) like this:

    http://milo.com/sheetrock-brand-10-l-shaped-metal-drywall-corner-bead-1

cut it in half up the middle so I had two strips, and then drilled through the doghouse and the insulation and bolted the strips down, clamping the insulation in place. It's held up really well and keeps the temps down. The water heater blanket will come with tape, but it doesn't hold down the edges / will peel off in a couple of months. Use a strip of drywall corner around the edge, fold over the edge to prevent water seeping in / to seal up the fiberglass.

As for sound deadening it's probably not doing a huge amount since it doesn't have much mass. But it was a cheap solution to the heat problem.

On the walls I used the bubble stuff mentioned earlier in this thread. Liquid nails holds it up. Liquid Nails is toxic too, but I couldn't come up with another method. Respirator!

95' heat and direct sun and it didn't give up. It's not acidic, so it won't eat the metal, and I just applied it in vertical lines, so condensation has an exit. I also left 3/4 inch of space between the wall insulation and the floor, to allow the water to escape. This winter will be the real test.

On top of the bubble insulation, I put a layer of closed cell exercise mat foam (thanks Craigslist) it is not this but looks just like it:

    http://www.allproducts.com/manufacture97/nsrubber/product4.html

with a water barrier of 6mil plastic. Then on top of that I put Masonite. It's as solid as a safe when you bang on the wall from the outside. Great sound deadening, I think: varied densities to break up many frequencies, lots of mass to kill vibration.

    Hope this helped - Slowleak

    oh, okay.

you'll see that the masonite (painted white) is pinned to the wall with a little L bracket I made of aluminum. The project's got a long way to go....

thanks Saskatrini - I've got to insulate the 'studs' of the walls somehow... I was thinking of drilling a few holes and spraying primer and paint and then... the dreaded expanding foam.

which might not be that bad, if the metal is well painted.

jury's still out on that one though.

I lucked onto a gallon can of black roof epoxy for $6 at our local restore. I used that on the inside walls and ceiling. I have some 3 inch strafoam that I
I plan on cutting into shape and will us that as insulation for the walls, which will be covered by the paneling.

Argh, I cannot figure out the photo thing. I have photos on the VCVC.org.[img][/img]

slowleak i would stay away from the spray foam inside the steel channels, the van has to breath or it will trap moisture and rust, there is a long topic on this , go to search and type in insulation it should pop up.
