    Carb Problem Empty Carb Problem

Post by TBMainard Wed Mar 17, 2010 2:57 pm

The carb on or '67 econoline is leaking badly, the guy we bought it from said his buddy rebuilt it? After I replaced the fuel pump yesterday I finally have gas coming out but I'm pretty sure it's not suppose to shoot out of the accelerater pumps on both sides. I called Napa: no luck, called Auto Zone: $14 for a rebuild kit $179 for new carb(240 with a 1 bl ) I was wondering if another source is known.

    Thanks Tim, Illionois

if it is this carb, and gas is coming out 1 or both side covers, then they are probably warped,,,,,,,put a straightedge across the mounting flanges between each hole on the inside flange of the cover and pound them back flat if they are not ,,,,,

You can take a 6 inch steel ruler, see if the flanges are flat,,,,,I can almost see from here that they are not, put the ruler under each hole and hit the center section down until you get those mounting surfaces flat again,,,,,

Thanks again the ruler worked! Now that I've replaced the fuel pump, and fixed both accelerator pumps, I put the carb back on, but now there's no gas shooting into the carb. It doesn't seem like it's getting gas. I do have gas going into the carb, but I don't have any shooting out where it should be. could tihs be a float issue?

    Thanks again for the help!

One of those covers is a Dashpot ,,,,,,So if the van runs and you don't see the accelerator pump squirting down the throat, then you are probably missing the return spring in the cover or the ball bearings or weight in the discharge port inside the carb,,,,,,,

Thanks...I won't be able to work on it any more tonight...and due to other obligations over the weekend...I won't be able to do anything till Sunday.

Thanks for the quick response! I'm just happy it's not leaking out the sides anymore!

Hopefully, I can get it running on Sunday. One week at home with it and we still haven't heard it run! Ugh!

No, we aren't that far west. We live near Crystal Lake, Illinois...about 50 miles NW of Chicago.

I 've worked on motorcycle carbs a few times; but this carb has a few more parts to deal with.

    Thanks again for the help!

Man made it, man can eff them up, man can fix 'em!
Good to hear you got it licked!
As a side note, a rebuilt often has issues too. I had a co-worker go through 14 (!) rebuilts before getting one that worked right.
Sometimes it's better to fight the one you have than to trade it for one that has other issues.

Those covers often warp. You can tap them with a hammer (easy, guys) and sand them down on a flat surface.

Are you willing to risk some fluid to see if it will work?
