Post by Dantra Sun Nov 01, 2009 3:48 pm

Since purchasing the 64 last month I have made pretty good progress without spending a many countless late nights in the garage. Since the truck spent it's entire life in Fresno, it has been pretty painless to work on. Everything just seems to come right loose without the hassle of snapping every other bolt off.

I went through the brake hydraulics and replaced everything, since most of it was gummed up. That included bending new lines and reusing the old fitings , replaced the front wheel cylinders along with new wheel seals, rebuilt the rear whee cylinders, new master cylinder and new rubber line on the way from ebay (taking forever...didn't see until it was too ate that the seller is in Argentina! )

I also replaced many of the bolt on items on the stock Slant 6 once I discovered that the ol' girl actually wanted to run. Replaced the water pump, fuel pump, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and rebuilt the carb. And it lives Very Happy Smokes like hell but she runs pretty smooth, just hoping the smoke passes after some drive time.

She marked her spot when she fired

Also had the radiator flushed and checked

While waiting to find some of my needed parts I test fit the Weld Draglites on the front

    To be continued....

nice looking truck and it even came with duals. I wish mine was that clean. I am dealing with the michigan road salt cancer. And found a bunch of bondo in the nose from a wreck.

jkr...I think that is the right front (heater hoses hanging). Did '64 come with them??? You work at a dodge dealer right?? Won't the self adjster hardware from a '68 work so he doesn't have to do it manually all the time??

No self adjusters....that'll be something to add someday.

Hoses came in today and after getting them on I had my wife help me with the final bleeding. Pedal feels great! The ol' truck actually saw pavement under it's own power (and stopping power) for the first time in 35 years tonight.

that is the most interesting bit of exhaust plumbing i'v seen in a long time. Question Question Question i see a manifold retainer triangle laying there so save it cause you will no doubt be replacing the manifold sooner than you think.
the cable, the lever, and the return spring are all you need for self adjusters. size of brales determines the parts needed but right up to the late 90's or so should work 10 inch or 11 inch brakes. rear stuff is the same.
yeah i got a lot of years in with the dodge brothers since i started pullin wrenches. first job was in 76, it was much simpler then.................
still havent started my disc brake conversion kit yet.........gotta get at it soon.

If you come up this way on a parts run I have a couple of ugly steely's with tires that hold air that are good for GARAGE USE not the road you can have if you got room for them.

Not sure what the "triangle" is...this is my first 225. The plumbing sure is interesting, I'll give ya that. Sounds really good for an old slant 6 and the original owner had that done back in the early to mid 70's. I'm exploring the idea of putting a smal turbo on just for fun, if I do, I'll need another stock manifold for that purpose.

appreciate the offer...I do actually have some other wheels (the weld wheels) but I need to get the correct lugs. While doing the brakes, I went ahead and switched the left hand thread lugs to rights too.

Oh boy Dan, did you figure out the LEFT hand thing or was that pre-existing knowledge? Freaked me out when I couldn't get any of the lugs off one of the parts van's wheels. Put the impact gun in forward to see if I could get it to move a little and the SOB flew off!

The triangle that jkr is talking about goes on each stud that mounts your intake and exhaust manifold to the side on the head. Nore than likey you should see a carbon streak on the side of the head by the stud that is missing that triangle.

I used to work on big rigs (stilldo at times) so when they didn't spin right off, I knew why.

Check on slantsix.org and dodgetalk.org. I got a running /6 and 904 trans for $200. from one of their postings. Bill carson came and got the engine from me for his van. They pop up because guys are dropping 360 strokers in.

After a short break to wait on parts, I'm back at it...

Started building the cage for the for fuel cell to mount in. Just need to add the fuel filler inlet to the tank and prep the cage for paint. It'll mount between the frame rails when finished.

All that steel around the fuel cell and you won't need the stock 150 pound block that they bolted at the back of the truck.
