first step in the resurrection Empty first step in the resurrection

Post by softesttouch Mon Oct 25, 2010 11:19 am

yesterday was a big day. i have taken lots of things out of lots of things, but this was my first engine removal. 66 gmc handi-bus custom. the hardest part was getting the crane's small castor wheels to roll in the mud and gravel!

plan so far is to keep 230 6cyl and 2 speed auto (powerglide?) trans., and a sweet interior and exterior, but i am open to suggestions. i like things vintage and original, but also don't want to put in all the time and money just to have my cool and beautiful van run like a dog.

if photos are not included in this post, please tell me how to make that happen.[b]

a 230 and a 'glide should be fine to putt around.
First things to do are to arm yourself with knowledge. Find a service manual if you are getting deep into it, and find parts suppliers.
Bag and tag all removed parts. These boogers are simple, but there are a LOT of screws, bolts, and parts when you strip them down!
Waiting to see pictures, and for any questions, look at old posts and ask!

Looks like you've got a real nice van to begin with. Just looking at your pics (and seeing what a buddy did with mine), I'm guessing that most of that paint will buff out! Good luck with the build.

    hey crowen57,

most of that paint will buff out? are you kidding me? that would be great, and much cheaper than a new paint job. how do i do it? just rubbing compound and elbow grease, or what? thanks

The link below is page 6 of my build. You can see the before and after pics. On page 5 you can see Lynn buffing. He used Maquire's #2, it took him three or four hours to do it all. Then I waxed it afterward. I was truly amazed that he could bring the paint back. I would have buffed right through!
