1st gen 3 on the tree shift linkage grommets Empty 1st gen 3 on the tree shift linkage grommets

Post by Ctjeff Sun May 12, 2013 6:48 am

I was wondering if anyone has a source or field engineered a solution for missing 3 on the tree shift rod grommets (bushings). These are the ones that mount in the bracket that also has the parking brake pulley that is located between the front drivers side tire and the engine. I recently upgraded to a dual master cylinder and the missing grommets cause one of the rods to sag so much that it rubs the top of the master cylinder. I read somewhere that the parts #'s are 3854838 & 3971312, but those numbers seem to be discontinued with no superseding #.

    Any advice is appreciated.

I use that split black plastic wire wrap that you snap over wires and just put it in those two U shaped holes

Thanks for the fast replies guys. I think I will try your fix Donivan65 for the missing grommets and look into the brass bushings to handle the slop in all the linkage pivots. I was planning on buying some wire loom anyway to fix up the wiring harness and maybe go to an alternator with a built in voltage regulator(Once I get the motor back in that is).

I am pretty sure the 67 pick up grommets will fit Chevy van shift lever and carb linkage rods,,,,,

It's hard to tell by the pic in the catalog, is that for the missing grommets on the bracket or the worn out bushings on the linkage pivots? Either way thanks for the link

Those are for the trans rods at the bottom of the steering column and for the carb rods in the doghouse,,,,

Great, I will order some up and see how they work. Thanks for all the help, I am anxious to get this thing back on the road where it belongs.

Based on your post, I just did this too and it works with a little grease on the rods.  I also used some wire ties at the top to hold the wire wrap in place....while I was at it, I also removed the brake cable pulley and greased its bushing, did the front one too....
