Grinding down shifting into 1st gear (synchro issue?)

Post by Jazontyler on Tue Jan 31, 2012 10:23 pm

    Guys,
Got the truck today. Everything seems fine in general. Driving it tonight, I noticed that I could not down shift into 1st gear while the truck was coming to a stop. It would grind until I almost came to a stop. I haven't driven this 3 speed before. Is this a synchro issue? Has anyone else experienced this, or fixed the same issue?
    Thx

I believe the 61 three speed doesn't have syncro on first gear, so you have to be stopped to shift into first.

That's true. 61-62 three speeds do not have a synchronizer on first gear.

Might have to learn the art of double-clutching! Tell ya what though, the ratio for first is not one you want to roll in. IIRC, double clutching from second to first almost put my forehead through the windshield!

That is funny. Yeah, i am finding that i really only need 2nd and 3rd gears ;-) Do you know the gear ratios of the 3 speed (61)? BTW, got it inspected, registered and titled today. I am now rolling around at lunch time.

Congrats! I don't recall, but someone will. I had some good info on the Ford 3.03 tranny somewhere...

i just picked up 3 61 pickups and got an original owners manual in one...read the whole thing for fun and it actually says not to shift into first unless truck is stopped...
