thinking out all the details of a swap from a 230 to a 292 in a 1st gen.

I know the passenger side motor mount will need to be relocated... no problem.

I do not want to lower the engine because I plan to use a manual trans with the factory mount... so the engine will need to stay in the stock location too, unless I want to lower the transmission and all the clutch and shifter linkages also.... I'd rather keep it stock location if I can.

The block of the 292 is 1.5" taller compared to a 230. Will the stock doghouse lid close properly with a 292 installed? I am willing to run an aftermarket air cleaner for additional doghouse lid clearance. Will an offy 3 single carb intake fit under the factory doghouse with a 292?

I have heard this additional height will cause an issue with coolant flow because the extra height of the 292 effectively raises the thermostat housing above the top hose inlet on the radiator, so the coolant will not flow to the engine properly.

    Is this correct?

If so, how can I deal with this without lowering the engine, but still maintaining the doghouse lid in the stock location?

I don't know about the clearance issues, but the coolant flow can be done with an inline fill at the high point and using a coolant recovery tank. use the same pressure caps and T the overflow lines together then to the tank. This will allow it to bleed all of the air out of the system. This is something I have done and know it works.

The 292 crankshaft has the 1/2 bolt holes,,,,,and the 250 flywheel holes are 7/16" ,,,,,so its something you need to be aware of......
