The points use 6 volts to the positive side of the coil. And that means that the wire that goes from the "R" terminal on the starter solenoid up to the connector under the drivers seat is a special resistor wire. You want 12 volts going to the Battery terminal on a HEI distributor that comes from the ON position on the ignition switch. And the closest place you find that voltage is at the connector that goes into the doghouse under the drivers seat. Just remember, the wire going into that connector from the ignition switch is 12 volts,,,,when it comes out of that connector and goes into the doghouse then down to the solenoid, it is 6 volts. So cut that wire
BEFORE it goes into the connector and splice a wire from it to the BAT terminal on the HEI. We got a wiring diagram on our home page that will tell you what color that ignition wire is. And if someone added one of those ceramic ballast resistors on the wire that goes to the Positive side of the coil, the input side of it would also be a 12 volt source for your HEI.....
