I like custom. You can make it what your vision is, not how the factory pumped it out, not what the original owner wanted.

With a restored van it's the same as all the other restored vans. I like vehicles that are unique not like all the same. I hate going to a car show and seeing a bunch of Mustangs, Camaros, corvettes all looking the same. That is one of the reasons that I got a first gen van (something different). I like how it was back in the 70's when everyone was customising them.

I understand not customizing a rare or unique vehicle (you don't want chop the top of a Duesenberg) but I don't think vans fall into this category.

Plus you can make it so it performs better and address issues the were a problem with 60's technology. Think poor braking and overheating.

    My two cents...

Thanks for your opinion, I was in the van scene in the 70-80s and planned on making it what we ran in the days. Mid engine, small block, whip etc...but was kinda curious how much crap to expect. I have the means now to do what we wanted to do back then so again Thanks for the input.

customize, make it your own!!  personally, i like restoring to what it 'could of been' in the '70's. a hippy van. mild to wild, old school or modern, cool as hell or just weird, do what YOU like! vanning is one of the few car cultures that embraces customizing and definitely the vehicle most suited for that. if numbers matching and "correct" is your thing, go for it but dont be a slave to what someone else likes, only one that has to like it is you!

Commercial vans were minimalist, incomplete vehicles from the factory. If you are going to own one as personal transportation, you MUST customize it!
While I don't think there is a lot of improvement available to the body, if you got vision and talent, GO FOR IT!
