I have a 1961 econoline with the 144 and three on the tree, and wanted to upgrade my engine. But still want to keep a three on the tree if possible. What kind of engines would bolt up to my original trans. I would really love to run a 200ci mustang six cylinder, has anyone done this?

    Thanks for any info

    Hey Drew!

You may be able to put a 200 in there, but they had stronger crossmembers to support those engines after '64. Mine has the two arms supporting the engine mounts rather than a true crossmember. Certainly that was the '61 design. Now, my 170 isn't too bad. Your 144 must be frustrating.

200 is the biggest direct replacement you can use. Not sure which years but some wont work. Fred Carello from this site knows all the particulars on it. I would swap out the tranny to a later synchronized one while your at it.

I have a 1977 200ci Mustang motor in my 65 but it has been built with Clifford Performance 6=8 technology. Very strong and FAST.
