I broke down today and Im stumped as to whats wrong. The van idles nice but as soon as i give it gas voltage spikes and runs rough....real rough...Dodge 318

see if disconnecting the vacuum advance hose changes anything,,,,

Have you looked @ the point set?? check inside the dizzy - carefully!! Look @ all on the advance plate!!

I did Twinpilot I looked all over did not notice anything. I will try that Donivan. Im also going to get a fuel filter and see what that does.......

Donivan That was it when I disconnect the vacuum advance smoothes right out pretty much. I guess you want me to vacuum test it ... I will after I get back from work this morning thank you......

that can still lead back to the advance plate,,,,as soon as you hit the gas pedal, the carb sends a vacuum signal to the vacuum advance for it to move the breaker plate and points,,,,something could be loose in that area,,,,

did you do it while the engine is running to see if moving that breaker plate makes the engine run bad,,,,

Went back out ...yes when I pull the plate running badly. I could only pull 7 on the vacumm gage when running but definatly the problem. I lubes the contact points on the plate also moves freely.

replace the Vacumn advance,points, CONDENSER!!!!! and lube the cam!! Look @ the wire going into the dizzy from coil!!! CLOSELY!! and set points with a DWELL METER!!

that sounds like a ground problem,,,,,the points need to be grounded,,,sometimes you need a little ground wire to ground that breaker plate to the base if you cant fix it

GOT IT............... You truly are the man Donivan. I had to clean the 3 contact points on the advance plate. Thank you so much.I would have been on this for a lifetime I bet ....and I hate not drivin the Van........I have fallen in love with this van it wasnt the prettiest but it has treated me great so far.
