I have a '4 on the tree' in my Falcon. How rare is it? Anyone know how many of them were made with 4 speed in 64?

The 4-speed was an option in 1963 and 1964.

We do not have the exact numbers form Ford, but I have the data for 2,652 Econolines in my database.

Of those, 1,907 have a transmission code listed, but 11 have bogus codes, which leaves 1,896 Econolines with a valid transmission code.

    1,607 have a code for a 3-speed manual transmission, which is 84.8%
    44 have a code for a 4-speed manual transmission, which is 2.3%
    242 have a code for a C4 automatic transmission, which is 12.8 %

Of those 44 that have a code for a 4-speed manual transmission:
    9 are in pickups  20.5%
    10 are in Falcons  22.7%
25 are in cargo vans  56.8%

Of course, we also have to take into consideration that we are gathering data from the field 50 years after the fact.

The Dagenham 4-speed transmission is very rare on the Econolines, and unfortunately not well liked.

You know it's funny, it is not desired or is thought of a as junk or weak transmission, but I've seen quite a few of those sold as runners over the last 3 years since I got my van. There's a 64 heavy duty runner w/ the 4 spd here in the county a guy could pick up for $1500 or less. So they are still running more than 50 years down the line...

Maybe it was more of a west coast option b/c of the more vast distances between towns. All the same they are generally seen as weak but yet many are still running the roads, out here at least.

I can give you contact info if you want to ship one 3100 miles Wink I haven't seen it in person but I have some pics he text'd me. He's been trying to sell it for at least 6 mo's. He's posted CL on and off over that time, but never with pictures....... W/o seeing it, I'd pay 1K

Seth G. - You might be on to something there on the West Coast thing.

3 of the 44 did not have a D.S.O. code, so we are down to 41 Econolines with a 4-speed transmission and a D.S.O. code.

14 of the 41 were special orders, based on the 6-digit D.S.O. code. 34.1%

Here are the top sales districts based on the D.S.O. code
10 Econolines from the San Jose sales district (4 were special orders)
    8 "" Seattle (5 were special orders)
7 "" Los Angeles (6 were special orders)
    3 "" Philadelphia (0 were special orders)
3 "" Home Office Reserve (all special orders)
    2 "" Denver (2 were special orders)

You West Coasters like that extra gear, like a guitar amp that you can crank to 11. Very Happy

Thanks for thinking of me, but I promised I would not buy any more. I did get two free Econolines this past weekend, so I didn't really "buy" any more.

Wow, so mine is 1 out of 44? Yes the original owner bought it in LA. I live in SoCal. Mine is still running strong! But can't downshift into second and first gear from third which sucks. Might be an issue that I need to fix. Thanks for the info!

That makes it 1 out of 6 than from LA and 1 out of 10 total. That's nuts.

    Sorry I was not clear.

I have 2,652 Econolines listed in my database, and 1,896 Econolines listed with a valid transmission code.

That's 1,896 out of the 544,144 that were made from 1961-1967.

Please take all the numbers you are quoting and multiply them by 287.

I wish there was some way to determine/guess-ta-mate how many vans of all types are left. For instance, Like how many no doors or 8 doors are left. I'd think the numbers have to be less than half produced are left?

I changed the setting from the default 800 px to 640 px so the picture wouldn't get cut off. Much too nice to not show it all! cheers

Is that a Gas Can on the rear door? That's one way to make someone think twice about rear-ending your van Twisted Evil
