    Hi everyone,

First i want to say sorry for my english, but i'm from Belgium so don't shoot me if i write any mistakes. I just bought this Ford Econoline last week and i was wondering what you guys think about it. I know it needs a lot of work but i'm looking forward to start with it. At the end of September it will arrive after it's 2 weeks journey. I learned a lot from this forum, thanks for that! But still i would like to know where i should pay attention for if i give it a first check-up. I know the engine is not running but he's in the van so that's a start, its a 170-6...

Any tips and hints are welcome!!
And if anybody knows someone over here in Belgium with a similar van, please tell me!!

When waking up any slumbering engine, make sure the fuel system is cleaned, make sure the cooling system holds water, make sure the crankcase is full of good oil and nothing else, get all ignition parts replaced, and last but not least, make sure the electical wiring is not going to cause a fire!

After getting it running, make sure it can stop and steer.
Looks like it can use a good cleanup, and how do you get in the back with seats blocking the side and rear doors?

If it hasn't left yet, can you get some parts thrown in to cut down on shipping?
These things can hold a lot of extra parts!

@ RodStRace : Thanks for the advice! Of course i can put some stuff in the back , but where are you from? It arrives in Holland (Lelystad). And i don't understand why the seats are in front of the doors, i don't know what the PO did to the van.

Depends on what is easy to find and/or cheap to ship. Get all the OTHER stuff! Very Happy

Tune-up parts, brake parts, U-joints, suspension rebuild parts (small)
tires, body parts, suspension hard parts (big)
any van specific stuff or anything else you might need that will be tough to ship later.

I'm a California boy who now lives in AZ.

Lookiing agin, it may be the front side door isn't blocked.

Looks like you have plenty of work to do.
Like me, you will be spending a lot of time ordering stuff from the US. Nothing is available over in Europe.
Also, US parts suppliers charge a ridiculous amount for postage. For example MACs, who i just got some brake parts and Kingpins from. Charge 55% of the value of the parts for postage, unless you want it fast, and then its double that...!!!
Still, at least stuff is cheap in the US. Shame nobody will post fuel....!!!

Hope you enjoy working on yours as much as i do. They are wicked vans to work on. Everything is nice and simple, and easy to get to....

The rear seat is stock, the others are typical school bus seats probably added for the church it serviced, evidenced by the writing on the side. 2 very rare things jump out at me,the fibergless dash skirt and the one year only 64 auto transmission. I ve got a complete parts van just like it here at my place, except a 3 speed.

    2: A new floorpanel
Anybody who can help me find these things?

sebastien, my best guess would be that you will have to make the floors out of sheet metal which shouldn't be too hard since it's pretty flat anyway.
as for the windshield i'd try some place like carglass, they can order most anything.

i will have my van in germany till the end of the year - where exactly are you located? i have seen an extended van at the kids'n'billies festival in the netherlands earlier this year, but don't know the owner...

    Tody,

I'm from Belgium, Tielt specific (In the West of Belgium), near Bruge. I'll give it a go with carglass, see how much they ask for it. And i've been searching a lot for a floor-panel, but i guess i will have to do it your way! Thanks a lot for the advice! You're probably longing as much as i did untill your van arrives?

well, i have a car to work on, a 72 mercury comet.
but my van will be here in december i think, so i'll keep it in the garage for the rest of the winter.

what are your plans for the van? it looks pretty rusty in general.
do you want to keep it stock or put in some fancy interior?

This weekend was a sandy weekend. I sandblasted my Van and putted on the epoxy-layer. I'm quit happy with the outcome, no extra holes or rust! So that's perfect. Next weekend it's cut & past weekend, i'll try to take out all the holes and replace them with solid panels.

I'm hoping to have mine to that point in a few months.

Make sure you rebuild the axles. When you sandblast it gets into everything, even the kingpins and past the seals.
