Shift tube Bracket Empty Shift tube Bracket

Post by mexbob Sat Jan 03, 2015 1:35 pm

Does anyone know the Ford part number for the Steering Column and Shift Tube Bracket? Also does anyone know if there is a replacement?

I am new to Ford Econoline community. I purchase a 1963 van in Hood, CA, and did enough mechanical work to drive the van to Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico via Tucson, AZ. The van had been setting for 8 or more years. I was able to arrive safely at my house in Hermosillo. The ride was as much fun as a Huey drop at 500 feet.

my van is stock with the exception of a 200 1965 mustang engine.

It is a cargo van with six(6) doors, side doors have no windows.

This is my stay occupied hobby.

Welcome MexBob, 1st it is nice to see a fire extinguisher in your van, but it should be closer to to you and the engine. I have a dog that loves driving in anything. You will need a new column  or someone with your needed part. A few Vans been parted out here on the for sale sights OR Old skool vic in So Cal on this sight with lots of stuff.

Welcome Bob! I take it you are a Vet? I might have what you need but most of my stuff is in another state. If nobody else jumps in I can help but it may take a few weeks.

    Shift tube Bracket Empty Shifter

Post by mexbob Sun Jan 04, 2015 5:47 am

Do you have photo of the Shifter, I am interested in the Clamp that ties the Shift tube to the Steering column. My son-in-law who lives in Cambridge Springs PA, is a Tool and Die person. I would like to see if new ones could be made for a reasonable price. I would like to be sure that your bracket is the same as the one on my 63 - 3 speed.

    Thanks

    Shift tube Bracket Empty Goat

Post by mexbob Sun Jan 04, 2015 9:40 am

I have eaten goat meat all around the world, it's much better than some things I have eaten,
My feeling is never negative always positive, Except when connecting a battery.

    2015 will be great!

Bob,,,,  I specialize in our steering columns. I make them into factory automatics and have figured out upgrades for them for many years now. I have any and all the parts that you may need to include replacement and year correct plastic shift indictor plates. The only parts for them that  I don't  keep are Carpenters or Mac's shift and turn signal knobs. Its easier for the customer to get one as they wont give me a quantity price.
Anyways,, I have a box of those brackets already cleaned and glass beaded,,, if you would like one let me know. Make it $15 bucks to include the Post Office charge.

PM me if you want one,,

PM sent. Thank you for all the information that you have posted. It has been invaluable in my rebuilding effort. In the future, I'm sure I will want to upgrade my braking system, loyalty to originality does not include dying.

I will be posting some photos soon.

One(1) more question how does one remove the shift and turn signal knobs?

Thanks to everyone who has posted on Vintage-Van(W), the help and wisdom has been great!

Post by Old Skool Mon Jan 05, 2015 9:26 am

I am 63 and had the 1st Econoline in the So Cal with a V8 in mine at 16 and so have learned a few things about them,, LOL.... Two things I have gotten very tired of,,, the 1st is shifting and the 2nd one is sitting on my brakes in the rain or the truck SUDDENLY turning when I didn't want it to. Something about staring at unplanned things in the windshield all of a sudden that I am tired of seeing. With that,,, and with brake fade towards the bottom of the hill I cant see driving ours with drum brakes anymore,,, Its tooooooooooooo much work and worry to me... Just my opinion,,,,

I too have eaten goat in addition to many other things. Part of my diving to include living in tribal villages in places like Guadalcanal and New Guinnea,,,,,, LOL THANK YOU for the THANK YOU,, that's nice to hear and payment in itself....

I have tried heating the plastic knobs in different ways in order to not ruin them,, AND GIVE UP.

Its not worth it for as inexpensive as they are. I have tried also many ways to mask them off so that I can sand blast and paint them in my rebuilt steering columns,,, that turning out to not work and be again more expensive in time than simply just purchasing new ones from Carpenters. Why would I go through so much hassle and work to save $12 dollars, end up with the primer not being as good as it could be at the joint and degrade my quality and still end up with a dull and worn out used one,,,,,,,,,, makes no sense to me????? My advice is to , use a hammer and just break them off and put new ones on,,,, ,,,,,, LOL...

Besides being the resident steering column expert, Old Skool makes a great disc brake conversion kit for our Econolines.

My Econoline collection lives in the back of a goat farm, so I have goats in and around the vans all the time. Makes it a little difficult when they decide to chew on the same tool I need to use.
