Hello. I just got my first van last week and need to replace the tires. When there is a lot of weight in it, the tires will rub inside the well when the wheel is turned all the way. The van has had the motor replaced with a 302 and the springs weren't replaced. It sits higher in the back at the moment, but I plan to replace the springs eventually. The PO told me to get smaller tires, like 60 series and it wouldn't rub. My question is, should I buy car tires or truck tires? The sizing that I think I need favors car tires. Since there is going to be a lot of weight over the front, I was told by a friend that I should definately get truck tires. I tried searching here for an answer but most of the threads are about sizing, not type. The current tires are 205-75-r15. I was hoping to not have to pay too much for the tires but I need something that is strong and is not going to rub. I do not plan on using this for a work van. The most that would be loaded into it would be camping gear. Any suggestions/experiences? Thanks.

I'm running car tires with the v-8 conversion and go camping all the time with no problem. I think the tire you are running is to tall and to wide But that's just my 2 cents.

Re: truck or car tires?
What would you recommend? The local tire discount place has good prices on 195-65-15's.
Would that be considerably smaller? Thanks

Re: truck or car tires?
So the general consensus is that it is not necessary to have the stronger tires on the van? I was worried about the amount of weight over the front tires, and the idea of the stronger sidewalls made sense. I am relieved though as the car tires are much cheaper. Thanks.

Your van is lighter than most cars on the road. Get car tires.

I roll on car tires, 195/65x15 front and 205/65x15 rear all with 6" wide wheels.

Re: truck or car tires?
Dont worry about the weight up front. The 302 only weighs 75 pounds more than the sixes.

Re: truck or car tires?
The guys at any decent tire store should be able to walk you through the tire sizing and weight handling. This info is cast into the side of each tire and as dix posted, all of it can also be found online. Learn this and most of your questions will be answered.
Just remember that the weight on the sidewall is not for static loads, but dynamic. Say to are slowing and going around a corner. The outside front tire is going to have more weight on it than what is there just sitting.
Provided that you aren't trying to get the smallest, cheapest tire around or going for the lowrider look, most tires will be able to handle the loads seen on your van.
