Stock Leaf Springs? Empty Stock Leaf Springs?

Post by Guest Tue Jul 09, 2013 9:31 pm

I have a question about leaf springs I hope someone can answer....
My 1968 GMC G15/G1500 VAN only has 2 leaf springs on each side in the rear...The "main" leaf (attached to the shackles) and one under it. Is this stock? Also my leaf springs are 2 1/2 inches at the u-bolts and gradually get wider to 3 inches at the shackles. Is this stock? I have been looking at pictures of other vans around the same year as mine and they all have more then 2 leaf springs on each side in the rear. Is this all stock or something someone else did to my van? It really seems dangerous to me to only have 2 leafs on each side. I have been driving it like this for 15 years but just got 1 1/2 inch lift blocks for it and I'm not sure if I should put them in with only 2 leafs on each side holding the rear end up. It seems dangerous to me.

    Thanks

The 2nd Gens have those weird springs that are 2 1/2" in the middle and 3" on the ends,,,,,they do put heavier duty 2 1/2" springs on them to replace those softer riding stock springs,,,,,,,

Yes, two leafs is stock. you will notice that the main leaf is also thicker where it narrows to sit on the perch. If you look at any leaf spring set up you will notice that there is only one leaf that is actually attached to the body. These are no less dangerous than any other in that regard. As Donivan stated, they do ride smoother with the stock two leafs.

,,,,,you might as well get rid of the solid front axle and put in coil springs if you are going to be messing with Mother Nature, Steve,,,,,,

its too much work for so little gain. I thing I have changed enough as it is. I do need to rebuild my springs though.
