    Greets,

Getting bodywork done...slowly...but it's getting done.

At this point, I'm looking at the two body seams that are near the front top of the roof pillars, on the sides of the windshield, probably 4-6 inches from the top.

I'd like to actually weld these seams together to make sure the stay.

However....the windshield would have to come out to do this right. I'm a bit apprehensive about taking out the windshield.

Is it difficult to R & R this windshield? Or more precisely, how difficult is it?

You have to rope it back in to jump the fence,,,,,,but you really need to pull the windshield out to check and repair the rust,,,,,,,,you need a new gasket,,,,,,see if the old gasket wants to co operate,,,,,,,bend it towards the glass in the inside,,,,see if it and the glass wants to push out,,,,,

1st gens are Easy, 2nd gens are a BIG  Pain.    I cut off inside lip(most of the time there dried out & has shrunk alot & leaks) I use suction cups on outside & slowlly pull it out. Have a safe place to put it before you pull , so you don't have to move it to mny times Shocked

Donivan....not quite sure what roping it in means, I'll have to look that up.

The gasket does need to be replaced, as it's shrunk leaving a 1/2" gap at the bottom, looks all dry and & flat.

Cutting the old one out as savage suggests looks to make 1/2 the job easy. I've changed a couple windshields, but there was always a little strip that was inserted in the to main gasket all the way around that pushes it apart and makes the final seal. THese don;t seem to have any such thing.

    Thanks to you both.

I'm curious as to what you have for a gasket now? Original would/should not have a place to create a gap. Reason I ask is I had one here that some PO had installed a smaller cut windshield and used a gasket perhaps from JC Whitney or something.

I think the flat windshield and gasket were changed many times over the last 45 years,,,,,,and they don't make the gasket anymore,,,,you use a pick up one,,,Precision WBL 653,,,,you put a rope or 12 gauge wire in the groove and pull the lip over the metal frame while you push the glass in,,,,,,,

Thanks Donivan.....I reckon that you can jam one corner in and then have to rope in the other two sides.

Here's the seal with the gap......(don't mind the bondo dust). This is just how it came. The seal, not the dust. You can actually see the bottom edge of the windshield.

The gap is a little less than I thought, but the different colored piece is actually a short little separate piece.

    Thnx.....fN

That looks normal to me,,,,,,,all the rubber shrinks,,,,,,look at the rubber on the side and rear glass if you have some,,,,,if its old, its splitting,,,,,,you wrap the rope all around the gasket and the ends stick out at the bottom inside the van above the ignition switch,,,,,someone pushes down and in on the glass and you zipper the rope towards the doors then up , then to the center, the idea is that as you pull the gasket up over the frame, someone pushes the glass and the gasket in so that the lip falls inside the van where it belongs,,,,and like I said,,, you can grab the lip and try and push it and the glass out,,,,,if it has not turned to rock yet,,,,,
