Post by Guest Thu Nov 13, 2008 9:34 am

hello, hope everyone is doing great and enjoying the ride
one question... should i drain the trans fluid or should i just top it off?
its old, the van was last tagged in 81...
and what grade should i use.
and last.. can i use the same gear oil for the differential housing?
    thanks y'all

That sounds like a plan,,,,,you want to get that old stuff out of there,,,,and its a good time to check and replace the seals. And if you can't find 90W, 85W-90 would probably be better if it gets cold by you,,,,,

My power-glide has been leaking too..

If I buy a gasket set do I need to know what power-glide I have, or was there just one?

Its a really good idea to check everything so you know what you got. you don't want any surprises like your backing plate cracking when you are trying to stop. If we are talking about a manual transmission, then you would have a seal where the driveshaft connects to it and another up there by the clutch. And you probably got O rings on the shifter shafts where they go into the trans. On the rear end,,,,you probably don't have a rear cover to remove and check the gears. So you got a seal where the driveshaft goes into the rear end and both axles have seals that you can see if they are leaking onto the brake shoes. (Look at this sending unit we pulled out of the Orange Chevy Van,,,,,you never know how time affects a vehicle )

The Aluminum PowerGlides are on 62-73 Chevys,,,,,Fram kit FT1017

I didn't know that Chevy trannies had backing plates :-)

However I was once told that one can "clean up" a manual transmission by draining the gear oil, filling the tranny with automatic transmission fluid, running it just a few miles, draining the auto fluid out and replacing with good old 85-90 gear oil.

    Is this a good idea?

I tried it once with my '79 mitsubishi manual tranny, but it was still noisy. I wound up replacing a few bearings inside the transmission (a local parts store/shop helped) and that fixed the problem.

You would probably make things worst by cleaning out all the built up deposits by running ATF in there,,,,,the o rings and gaskets and seals would probably start leaking. If its noisy, there then its worn out. My point is to drain it, see what and if anything comes out. Then you got an idea of what you got. There are newer cars that actually use ATF in their manual transmissions.

Didn't have any leaking problems as a result, but it did require renewing various bearings (mainly one, as I recall) to fix the original problem). It was about 16 years ago so my memory is hazy on whether we replaced any o-rings or seals. I haven't tried this "fix" since, as I absolutely agree that noisy bearings can only be fixed by new bearings.

this moves a bit from the OG posting but deals with gear fluid as well
this morning i was happily changing the gear oil in the differential cassing,
took the cover and was whistling and cleaning, just like a happy vanner
but then the wether turned on me...
i got dust, not much, but still dust inside the diff. i cant clean it now and have not check how far inside this dust is in the apparatus..
i know i have to clean it, but how do i do this, whats the best way to get that out?
    thanks

There should be a vent hole on top and it should have a cap or hose on it to stop the dirt from getting in,,,,,I would just spray everything in there with brake parts cleaner and blow it out with air or just let it dry out.
