the dodge service book calls for dextron in a automatic tranny does it hurt to move up to dextron 2 or 3 im sure back in the day dextron was all that was avalable.

I've been using dextron/mercon III in mine and have had no problem (fingers crossed) in about 500 miles. I don't think you can even find plain dextron any more.

mercon fluid is designed for ford type transmissions but can be used in all. it is a higher grade of fluid. dextron 3 and 4 are good for all others but should not be used in ford. it's also best to not mix ( dextron and mercon ) to much either.

mine had auto transmission fluid im not sure how long it was in there but the rear bearing burned up in the transmission and it started to whine real bad. but my van also had 170,00 orignal miles so that could of took part in it
