727 Transmission fluid type ? Empty 727 Transmission fluid type ?

Post by Keith D Sun Oct 07, 2018 6:15 pm

Wanted to find out what type of transmission most people are running in their 727 automatic transmissions.

    Type F, ATF +, Dexron, ?

The van will just see street duty, the transmission will be behind a mild small block making about 350 HP. I am not sure what is in it now but I am going to drain out and change the fluid. Since I don't know what is in it now and I won't be able to get all the fluid out (from the torque converter) will there be an issue by changing type and having it mix with the old fluid type?

    Thanks...Keith

I have refilled mine with current ATF+4 (Mopar branded), but I understand from various 727 freaks, that the 727 is extremely open to almost anything (from the late 60s till today). And 350hp is not close to get the 727 to its limits in our smallish vans/trucks (except perhaps you load and tow to the max). It is supposed to be good for up to 800+hp (mild modification might be needed in those cases).

Just make sure you have the throttle lever connected properly. That's very important to work.

And you oil level is important. Don't ever over- or underfill. Both is bad for the trans. Always measure in N at operating temp (after switching all gears). The fluid has to be non-smelling (no burning smell) and has to be red. If brown and/or smellish' - have it get a tune up by a 727-specialist and full refill (including torque converter).

    Just my 2 cents.

and if your transmission and converter are original pieces there is a good chance there is a drain plug on the face of the converter. OE stuff will have a small cover "plug" in the center of the inspection pan. if it does remove it and rotate the crank pulley till the plug comes around. they can hold a quart or more...…. jus sayin

Good to know...I am new to 727 automatics, until now all my classics have been 4 speeds. With the stop and go traffic in town an automatic just made sense.

    Keith,
My operator's manual says automatic fluid Type A suffix A and every 32,000 miles, the trans and torque converter should be drained, oil pan and screen removed and cleaned, linkage and clutch adjustments made, filter changed and the unit refilled. Also drain and refill the rear end fluid at 32,000 miles.
