Hey Scott! Every few weeks drive the van instead of your main wheels, even if it's just to the store. It's fun and good for the van. And, as Don will surely tell you, we gotta get these vans out so people can see them!

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
Thanks for coming down the hill Don and getting her running, BUT the reason I stopped driving her in the first place was mainly due to the horrible noise permeating from the goulash of gears I call my differential. It's probably gonna be a while before I tackle this feat, but at least she's safe and warm tucked in my garage. For now, it's...

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
So Scott, while you are taking out the diapers, get a pan, unscrew the top 2 bolts on the differential cover 1/2 way,,,,,,,then remove the other 8, and let the cover hang there till all the oil drips into the pan,,,,,let it drip for a couple of days,,,,,then see if there are pieces of metal in the oil with a magnet,,,,,I think your pinion shaft bearings went bad,,,,,,,

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
Your original rear end had the broken pinion shaft bolt and the side gears were spun on the carrier assembly,,,,,we used parts off the Orange van rear end that me and Rich took apart,,,,,,,I would say you will be probably taking that rear end out and taking it to San Diego Gear and Axle to be rebuilt,,,,,,do you have that old rear end in your back yard?

Hey guys, welcome back! Scott, careful, you're getting as bad as me, ignoring our precious vans!
So is that another rear end you picked up, not the Orange van rear end?

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
That Orange Van rear end me and you took out a while back, had that 427 in it and the pinion splines were twisted so I did not use the pinion out of it last time we had Scotts rear end apart,,,,,his side carrier bearings spun so I used only the carrier housing....but his pinion bearing gave up such that when he took off, the pinion shaft would slide back and hit the ring gear housing and it made some big noise,,,it was really hard to get that shaft out,,,,the bearing was frozen onto the pinion shaft and would not easily come out of the housing,,,,but he needs to get new bearings, a seal and a crush sleeve and we can get him back on the road again,,,,,,,but it was just one more repair that the van needed,,,,,,come to think of it, that makes just about every single piece on that van that needed to be fixed or repaired since he got it,,,,,,,,

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
Scotty, I agree, sox are not looking so hot this season. Some need an attitude adjustment!!! Vanagain, these vans are like us, the older they get, the more trouble they have with their rear ends. Hee hee hee!!!

Re: The Surfing Guy's 65
It's been a while since I've checked in with the V-V crew, so here is the latest.
I've been cruizin' the van whenever I can and she is running like a top! I believe mechanically, she is just about complete with the exception of some minor tweaking. Maybe a carb rebuild, as this is the original carb and it seems to start and idle a little rough...nothing major though...
I did have loads of fun in it being out on the 4th!

Mounting the safe
Since, I really do use my van for trips to the beach, especially for surfing, I needed to come up with a way to leave my valuables for hours at a time in a van that does not really lock up. I don't know where you all live, but here in San Diego, the beach towns are chock full of dirty scoundrels who would just LOVE to take your wallet, keys, smart phone, etc. and pawn it off for a six pack.
In the past, I would "cleverly" stash all my valuables around the van, but I was always merely rollllllllling the dice! I decided to mount this small safe behind the driver's seat, so I could lock my goodies tight and go have some fun! Now, all I have to do is lock 'er up, clip the key on my lanyard, place it around my neck and secure it under my wetsuit.
Here's what I did. I drilled out the 4 mounting holes in the bottom of the safe, lined it up with the upper ridges of the bed and mounted the safe using long self-tapping screws with washers. Then, took some of that nice rubbery insulation that I used for "sound-proofing" the van walls and made a comfortable bed for my possessions.
Here's what it looks like. If all the stars align, I will take if for a test run later today!
