E van doghouse gasket? Empty E van doghouse gasket?

Post by bubbafrye Mon Aug 27, 2012 1:23 pm

I know this has been covered *somewhere*, but all I could find around here was A-van specifics.

Anyone know where I can get new doghouse seals for the lid and the top of the doghouse? I didn't see anything on Mac's.

Any other gaskets that might fit [like the S-10 door seals on a Chevy?]

Anyone have photos of what a clean implementation looks like - mine are pretty shot.

    Thanks!

    Hey Bubba
    I've got the same problem.
Fred Carello from RI told me to use '88 Caravan pop out window weatherstripping. Need two windows worth.
Problem here in Jersey is that they are hard to find in the junk yards.

you can find 1988 dodge caravan window seals on rockauto.com although I have no idea which to use for the doghouse application...

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Anyone out there have pics of a clean gasket setup - maybe even a profile of the gasket(s)?

That would be handy to compare to some aftermarket setups.

    Thanks!

I went to my local O'Reilly Auto Parts last January to see what they might have
for weatherstripping. I ended up buying a package of part number CRD 01080, which contained 10 feet (about 5 inches too much). We were going on what turned out to be a 750 mile trip, so I wanted to seal the lid (mostly Martha's side!) For 24.99 I was willing to see if it would work out. While I had the lid off installing the seal I was thinking to myself that there is no way this is going to work. The seal seemed like it was too big and I was wondering how I could trim it to size. I test fit the lid, and to my surprise, it fit great! I wish I
    had done this long ago!

    Particulars of the weatherstrip:
    Mfg by Carrand Companies
    Sold as "Super-stik" weatherstrip
    Dimensions: .65" thick x .75 wide x 10' long

I used a 10ft roll of 3/4" wide X 5/18" thick adhesive backed weatherstrip I bought at Autozone in the weatherstrip section. Can buy online at www.metrommp.com -pick "universal parts"; then "ahesive backed weatherstripping" then scroll down to part # MW51634..

Hey guys -thanks again for all of the feedback.
For 3/4" weatherstripping, I'm guessing that you are talking about the lid seal.

Any thoughts or pics of the lip gasket on the actual doghouse body, or are y'all suggesting the same weatherstripping there too?

I've got weatherstrip there now, and the stuff just compressed down after about a month and I'm getting a fume-filled draft right by my knee.

Mostly I'm just wondering what the stock gasket on the doghouse lip looks like as mine was long gone before I got the van.

    Thanks!

The stock gasket around the bottom of the doghouse lid; I had a good piece of the original left; -and that 10' X 3/4" X 5/16 was real close to that, -except maybe the original width 5/8" -but the 3/4 works fine. For insulation inside of the doghouse lid, the original not good even when the van was new, as my 67 was 3 years old when I bought it, and watched the lip seal and the insulation on the inside of the lid deteriorate over the years. Then for the insulation inside the doghouse lid, used double backed foil 5/16" thick, the roll from Macs was 4' X 6' -enough to do 2 lids part# at macsautoparts.com was V700770X

Thanks Carl. I've got the lid under control. My original gasket is still there and in relatively good shape, though a little hard. I'll swap that out soon enough. I got some ~1" thick foil-backed insulation that worked wonders for the lid shell too.

What I'm really trying to track down is what to put around the lip of the doghouse body, where the lid sits, not the lid itself. Have you guys been running stripping around the outer lip that is ~1/4 inch? or is there a gasket that fits up and around that L shape?

    Thanks as always.

E van doghouse gasket? Empty E-van doghouse gasket

There was not a gasket on the top of the doghouse, when the van was new. The rubber seal on the bottom of the lid was it, and it sealed on the top of the "L" of the doghouse top. -no more hot fumes come thru on mine now. -and I did have to adjust how tight it fits; and the hinges in the rear and the clasp up front can be adjusted up or down.

It's supposed to have a gasket/seal? Smile Mine doesn't have anything but a tarry like sealant between the doghouse body and the floor. Does anyone have pictures? There seems to be a lot of different terms and opinions floating around about what goes where.
