my van idles at 1050 in park and drops to near 500 when put in gear. 500 is too low and stalls frequently. what am i doing wrong here? is carb junk? i know that the autos and manuals are jetted a little different but dont know where to start. i have extra carbs and parts, but would like to know what is wrong before i start unbolting stuff.

so you have an automatic I presume?

Turn the idle down to around 650 or 700 in park. then see what happens in gear.

Set the idle to about 600 in Park, then spray some carb cleaner down the throat of the carb and then on the outside and intake manifold gasket IF the RPM speeds up,,,,,,if the mixture is right, the carb cleaner will kill the engine,,,,,if it speeds up, you are too lean,,,see if spraying all around the carb and intake mainifold finds an air leak,,,,,and try and adjust the mixture screw out more or check and see if any hoses are off or leaking,,,,,,Float could be set too low,,,,,,check that bottom bowl gasket,,,,REAL EASY to put it on backwards,,,,,
