Post by Guest Sat Dec 03, 2011 12:25 pm

    Hi
My 64 E van would only shift to into 2cd and 3 rd now only 1st and reverse?
Had the linkage, clutch, and trans. checked ok.
I think it may be in the column? Are there parts still availible?
    Thanks Rally72

Well its probably the same as this Chevy,,,,,the shift rods need to be adjusted so that this pin, which is connected to the shift lever, can move up and down freely to park in each lever slot and then move the lever to shift the gear,,,,,,

One check is to see if the levers are lined up,,,,if they are not, you can see that the pin cant find the 1st and Reverse slot,,,,,on Chevys, there is a ball on the tip of the shift lever where it connects to the shifter shaft,,,,if that ball breaks, it won't pull up that pin to catch the 1st and Reverse lever,,,,so try and pull up on the shifter shaft by hand, and see if you can find 1st,,,,,

There is a hole in the floor next to the steering column where you put a 1/4" rod, like a number 2 Phillips screw driver, to line up the shift linkages.
First - Loosen the nuts where the shift rods connect to the transmission.
    Drop in the 1/4" rod.
    Wiggle the shift lever.
Tighten the nuts at the transmission.

If that does not work, then you probably have a problem inside the column.
