engine shuts off Empty engine shuts off

Post by Guest Wed Dec 03, 2008 11:49 am

there is a problem that i cant get solved
when im driving my van sometimes the engine stops running.
i let it warm up for some time, take it out for a cruise around the 'hood and sometimes when im stepping on the gas and let go to change gears it just dies. its between 2nd and 3rd gear. not going fast at all.
could it be that the carb it getting flodded?
also i think its running rich, it smokes a bit.
    thanks.

WOW, Where to start? This seems to be a common issue lately.

    1. Does it idle ok after it warms up? If not fix that first.
(If it's low fuel pressure or flooding, you may just solve your whole issue)

    2. I would try the fuel can feeding the Fuel pump trick. That will isolate the problem. If it runs fine then you know it's in the tank or lines. If not, then you know it's something on the engine. Fuel pump, Carb or Distributor.

    Yes, Distributor...
80% of Carburetor problems are in you Distributor ya know.....

    3. Could be something as simple and Timing or a Carb. adjust issue.

Anyway, good luck and hope this helps.

You need to try and narrow it down a little. Take the air cleaner off and look down the carb. Pump the gas pedal and see where the gas sprays from in there. That is the accelerator pump discharge jet. Once you can recognize where it is, then, when it dies, pull off the air cleaner and pump the gas pedal and see if it still sprays or if there is a LOT OF GAS sitting in there. (this will tell you if you got too much or too little gas) There is always a chance that there is something floating around in the carb that gets sucked into the main jet then floats away once the engine dies. Also, unplug the vacuum advance and drive it. See if it still acts up. (You are testing the breaker plate ground and wiring with this)
