My 65 chevy is making alot of noise in the front right corner. It sounds like I'm driving on directional tires. It finally dawned on me, "wheel bearings". Now I have the hub off, do I have to remove the seal to get the inside bearing out? Do I need a new seal?

Yes, you will need to remove the seal to remove the bearing. Yes, you will need to purchase a new seal and most likely new bearings. Good Luck!

Re: Front wheel bearings
You will need to beat the cups out of the hub and beat the new ones in,,,,,,IF,,,,,the cups have not spun in the hub and wrecked it,,,,,,

Re: Front wheel bearings
i just did mine, and the cups are a p.i.t.a. but reinstalling is too bad. best way i found to install cups and seal is to get a big socket, same diameter or slightly smaller and use it to push them in evenly. make sure you properly grease the bearings. smearing it on the outside isnt enough. force they grease from the front to the back of bearing. when it squirts out the back, you know their is no dry spots. had an old mechanic teach me that when i was 16. maybe way overkill but i never replaced the same bearing twice.

Re: Front wheel bearings
If you don't want to get grease on your hands, put bearing grease in a sandwich bag, drop in a bearing, & work the grease into the bearing.

Re: Front wheel bearings
You guys mention "cups", plurel. I only have one on the inside. Is there supposed to be one on the outside? Don, do you have an exploded view of a front wheel hub?

Re: Front wheel bearings
When they say cups they mean the races that the bearing rides in. There is one on the front side and one on the inside. You should be able to replace all for bearings and the seals for under $50. Bob

Re: Front wheel bearings
I surely know something about changing wheel bearings from the last 500,000 miles I put on my van,,,,,take a punch, find the notches down in the hub, knock the cup down,,,turn it over, do the other,,,,,take the old cups, grind the outsides a little till they fit back in the hub,,,,use them to knock the new cups back in,,,,they make good installers,,you grind them so they dont stick in the hub,,,look at how the cups are supposed to sit in the hub first so you know that you beat the new ones in far enough,,,,, the bottom picture shows the old cup that I used with a 2x4 to beat the new cup down back into the hub,,
