Third brake lights Empty Third brake lights

Post by Guest Wed Aug 17, 2011 12:01 pm

I am considering a third brake light for the 61 Econo pickup. I am looking at two I found on the internet.
This one is 6 1/4" long and has 10 LEDS and I think would look good above the rear window

This one is 12" long and has 15 LEDS and I am thinking maybe two of them mounted in the rear roll pan instead of one on the cab

    I would appreciate any thoughts.

    Mike,
I got a 2001 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN 3RD BRAKE LIGHT for my 66 panel. It's about 16" long...

Yeah, It's pretty simple too. Two bolts, one at each end. Two wires and the bottom has a nice thick weather strip! Think I paid $15 off F-eBay...

they are both cool but i think the first one looks more old school, either way the way these idiots drive nowdays a third brake light is a good idea.

Thanks for your opinion. I like the first one too but keep thinking that two of the second one on the roll pan would draw more attention. I won't have a bumper.

I truly mean this in the best of ways, but if you wanted it to look 'old school' wouldn't you just not put a third brake light on it at all?Smile

Old school is great but safety is better. My 61 won't be old school anyway. Close but it will have a lot of modern upgrades.

Bill, if I do the roll pan then do you think the lights would look best molded in. Another option is using an 18" just like the ones in the second pic and molding it into the closed in tailgate area since I won't have a tailgate anymore. I bought a side rail from Tim that I am using to close the tailgate in.
    All opinions are greatly appreciated.

I have pondered getting one from a newer Dodge van like the 96 my grandparents have now. All it is, is a plastic housing that sits on the back of the roof and being plastic it could be trimmed to fit. Probably not the best looking, but would be functional.

I have seen those too. I think I am going to use amber Jeep turn signal lights and clear Jeep back up lights so my tail lights will be just brake lights and tail lights. The Jeep lights look a lot like the Econo back up lights. The amber lights could also be on all of the time when the headlights are on. I have a new roll pan with the license plate insert so I would have to put the long brake lights on each side of it and that will require two but if I mold one long one into the molded in tail gate I would only need one. Decisions, decisions. I love it when there are so many alternatives.

Low or high I think either would be cool, but seeing as it's a fixed panel, I think something molded in like what they use on the back of a pick up cab would look sharp at the top edge. and put it in thier face.

    Mike,
There was a study somewhere that the higher the third brake light the better they are seen by the driver behind you. I am going to do a third light also, I liked your second choice, mounted high.

Donn I read that study and a couple of police officers I know told me the same thing. The higher the better. Maybe on on the cab and two in the roll pan. Really get their attention.

Thinking if you could work these into the rear pan or a bumper they would make awesome taillights!!

    Charlie,

I got hit in the rear of my jeep while sitting at a light last year. Was pushed into the truck in front of me. Once you have been through that YOU WILL want the third light protection..

I'm with Donn on this. Been there done that! A 3rd brake light may not look cool to some but a van with a pushed in rear.... definitely "Not Cool!"

I have two beliefs while on the road:

    1) Stupid people in large groups are a force to be reckoned with.

    2) You may very well be the best driver on the road. But keep in mind the worst one is out there too.
