Needs a new exhaust/muffler. The one on there now looks and sounds like crap. Any recommendations.. I realize the 200ci motor isnt going to sound like a hotrod but it has to be better than the current sound its giving off.

Re: exhaust/muffler
I'm running the cliffords on a 200, and hooked it up to a Patriot exhaust system (side pipes) that have internal mufflers and aren't that expensive (the headers are probably twice as much as the Patriot pipes). Need some pipes in between of course, but the split design of the headers makes it easier to run a pipe to each side. (My friend's shop hung the exhaust system for me.)
Sounds pretty good to my ear, but you won't mistake it for a nice V8 rumble. My van came with an aftermarket muffler and a cracked manifold, so this is a big improvement over that set up.

Re: exhaust/muffler
Hey R.A.
This is a great topic- I've been strugging with a choice in exhaust and
muffler, trying to get a good sound, and not sound like a asthmatic
rice tuner...
Here are a couple vids with good set-ups, pretty good sound:
200 six, split Hooker Headers, Flowmaster 40's (a little "frappy" to me)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co4J5gWwitM (outside)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSxqD-r_1Fs&feature=related (inside)
200 six, Clifford Duals, Thrush Turbos, Tri-carb, 2" pipes, blueprinted- well made motor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k66RDM1NR_8&feature=related (outside)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj3gAxj2O4c&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL (inside, sorta)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwaHsARLt9I&feature=related (underneath)
I am not only looking for an exhaust as you are, (*except I am building a 250 six and got
Classic Inlines stainless dual headers,) but also want a particular sound.
There are a couple other options that sound incredible but they use resonators and cost some bucks...
Curious to see what you end up with!
George

Re: exhaust/muffler
Thanks for the links to the sounds.
Im still not sure. Im replacing Headers, Muffler and exhaust. Several different options and variations to choose from. One I get them I will post up what ive bought.
Besides Cliffords ive also looked at classic inlines products over at fordsix.

Re: exhaust/muffler
My 170 is a stock engine and I still have the small exhaust pipe from the engine to the muffler but I have a cherry bomb on it with a 2 inch outlet with a chrome tip... not a power house but most people nod their head at it....

Re: exhaust/muffler
Hello everybody!
Im digging into this same topic, again.
Have a 200 not souped up or anything, stock. Im looking at that new ol' skool muffler by cherry bomb. Its baffled filled with fiberglass.
Or how about the regular glasspacks. I understand the longer the muffler the quietest it gets.
Any advice??
The wife will use it daily to drop the kids at school and random errands.

Re: exhaust/muffler
i'm a big fan of the smithys mufflers from patriot. they look like a cherry bomb, but sound alot cooler. i've got one for my 170, and have run them on alot of straight motors. sixes and straight 8's.

Re: exhaust/muffler
What size is that flowmaster inlet/outlet... i was just thinking to get a single in dual out and run it just the same.... but doing it with a turbo thrush or cherry bomb.
¿got any pictures?

Re: exhaust/muffler
i've been thinking about what to do with mine lately. from the start i wanted headers and side pipes, but several dudes i know around here have jumped on the side pipe train so i'm thinking about going a different route. unless i come up on some cheap thrush side pipes, then it'll be back to my original plan.
i'm also running a 302 small block

Re: exhaust/muffler
I'd like to pile onto this thread. I just installed a 200 in my '64 and I need to get a new head pipe. I tried to use the '65 pipe for a mustang 200, but it hangs WAY too low. Is there an off the shelf exhaust head pipe that people have found that is the same shape as my 170 little pipe?

Re: exhaust/muffler
heres a pic of the pipes coming out, i used 3 inch stainless tubing to make the pipes
heres a pic of the flowmaster, its a single in and a dual out the only bend went over the e brake cable on the passenger side, i make the pipes and i spent $50 on the muffler..i paid a guy i know to weld it all together for me. ive heard a lot of mufflers but ive just always been partial to flowmasters..it has a nice deep hollow sound and for a 170 straight 6 anybody that doesnt know any better thinks it has a v8 in it. well worth the investment.

My 200 has a set of hooker headers and two flowmasters with 2" pipes that dump right in front of the rear wheels, sounds great.

Re: exhaust/muffler
I will say I have found one downside to my Patriot side pipes. I can no longer just slide under the side to look at something underneath! My gear shift sticks on occasion and it used to be easy to just roll under the drivers side, wiggle one of the levers on the trans a bit, and voila, problem solved (for the moment). Can't do that any longer. Only way is to creep from the front or back, which is way more difficult.

Re: exhaust/muffler
I just installed a 2 1/2" muffler I had sitting on the shelf , its constructed with perforated baffles, casing is shaped like a flow master.
I installed it as close as possible to engine and turned it out in front of the rear wheel, all in 2 1/2" and it has a nice small V-8 burble sound.
I haven't figured out how to put pics on yet.
