Post by Scott Tue Nov 17, 2009 7:16 am

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the good wishes..

Yesterday they think they got the last of the metal out, and most of the rust. I have to go back on Friday for the follow-up, that's when they will be sure. I think it scared me more then it should have, the pain wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but it was pretty scary to have them poking at my eye and saying it was to deep. When I went in Monday they were surprised at how fast it was healing, but they had to dig in again to get the last of it.

Recovery seems to be pretty quick, right now that eye is a blur, but no pain, so its just a matter of time now. Sure hope they don't find anymore on Friday. They said that the little rust they couldn't get won't be a problem if it gets left behind.

I'm looking around now for some decent safety goggles that I wont find uncomfortable wearing, and won't fog up on me. Thanks 67a for the link, I've been poking around the site, looks like good stuff.

Hopefully by tomorrow I will be good enough to get back in my garage and start working again, its only been four days and I miss it already.

Scott get one of those full face shields that flip up & down like a welding mask. I'm like you and don't like the glasses fogging up every 5 min. The face shield will give give full protection and not fog up

Took the Handi to work today cause I needed to pickup some parts for the Scout from one of the guys at work. Stopped to get some gas this morning and the filler neck to tank rubber hose is now leaking!!! Guess I need to get one of those now.

The guys at work like to give me crap about the "mystery machine", as they call it. So I did a powerbrake smokey burnout leaving work tonight............they all shut up and have some new respect for the Handi. I'm pretty sure they dont know that there is almost no weight on the rear tires, and that it doesnt really have alot of power!

My brother and I were talking about that yesturday. He reminded me that he has a couple projects also, 74 Cuda' and a 59 DodgeP/U. Gonna have to learn to share. Definately going to be there for the doghouse finish, thats where all the metal working equip will be. Until we shut down for the year, which isnt far off now, I haven't had any free time for the van. Plan on getting back on that after the holidays.

The chev survived a successful cylinder head transplant today. The result? exhaust actually flows down the pipe. The huge miss [30psi] in cyl #6 has vanished. You can hold a conversation on the phone AND with your pasenger! Very quiet and satisfying. I'm the guy texting on his blackberry while smoking a cig and shifting his 3 on the tree, watch out, cause now you won't hear me coming!

And no exhaust comes in through the doghouse!

Finished blasting all the parts I got from Bill (Bills66) to include the entire 2nd Gen doghouse! Packed up some parts for shipping to other members. Weather permitting I will start removing the 1st Gen doghouse tomorrow.

Dan I used about a 5/16 drill bit and an old wood chisel to remove the doghouse from my 68 parts van. Didn't have any problems.

I used both, cutter and a 3/8 low angled drill bit, some of the spots get doubled up and are tough for the cutter, good center punch and gentle push on the drill and it will free up the weld,, its easy to go all the way thru ,,lol

    Bill,
I grew up in upper Michigan on the shore of Lake Superior and I'm no stranger to a -100 degree windchill and climbing out of a 2nd story window to get out of the house after a snowstorm. I love to hunt and fish but as good as it is there and I do miss it, I really hate the cold now. So I'm enjoying the what is now "cold". The 70 degree winters. Besides, it's perfect for working on the van!!!! santa

Did some work on the doors today. Welding up some holes and a few patches. Also started working on the guage cluster but still a work in progress. I had a few things get in the way of getting more done, "Beer" was one of them!
