Lets see what I did this week,,,,,,

Got a brand new chainsaw blade, cut a foot off the stump,,,,,cut 3 roots and since they were filled with rocks,,,,,it ruined my new chain,,,,,,so I drilled a hole in it and poured in some stump killer.....

What are you up to? - Page 3 Workin20

Then,,,,,took apart my Honda Scrambler to repaint it,,,,,,

What are you up to? - Page 3 Workin21

What are you up to? - Page 3 Workin22

And since I had all my paint removing equipment out, decided to strip the Blue Doors. But it sure was not fun taking off 5 thick coats of paint. Now I got to round up all the etching primer, sealers and top coats again,,,,,

I've got my front end all sandblasted and painted ready to go back together with new king pins. Decided to paint instead of powder coat for a couple reasons, time & money. Besides, what I ended up with looks just as nice, and I did it myself. Smile Just going to re-install my original front leaf springs so to be able to roll the Van around waiting to install the lift kit and drive train.

Today I'll be under the Van all day sanding, cleaning, painting and undercoating while the front end is out of the way. Then it'll be body work time!!! cheers

Last weekend I returned to the roof of my 67. I thought I should inspect all of the rain gutter since at the back of the van there is some dreaded rust up there. So I scraped out the (still pliable) body putty to see what is going on:
What are you up to? - Page 3 Roof110

What are you up to? - Page 3 Roof210

As I dug out the putty I see some rust but not so bad. This photo shows the worst part on the sides:
What are you up to? - Page 3 Roof410.

I will use a rust arresting primer on the scrapped and sanded rail, but my question to any of you body masters is what is a good replacement for the body putty I scrapped out? Is silicone seal OK or is there a better filler?

Silicone won't hold up,,,,,the real stuff, seam sealer is the best. It comes in a caulking tube from Napa. You can paint over it. It is real hard to smooth out because it sticks REALLY GOOD to everything,,,,,,

just got back from lowes, heres my question hows that snap together laminate flooring? i want to use it on the floor and walls up to the fiberglass trim around the windows. i took measurements, probially get 5 boxes. ill be useing 1/4" plywood-( polyeurathane on both sides to prevent any decay) as a base . will i need to use plywood on the sides or just ferring strips? its a "floating floor" im no means a wood worker- i can do it, results are good. im just slow and loose intrest quick. i want to finish this van and i want it looking as good inside as it does on the outside. thanks to everyone here for the inspiration. Ben,
It will work for the floor but you will need a plywood base. And as for the walls? It could be done, however you looking at a lot of work since you will also need a plywood base and some serious adhesive and probably some screws as well to keep it in place. Keep "Heat, Time and Vibration" in mind when choosing van wall covering.

I used Lacquer thinner. I laid down a bead of sealer then I used an acid brush to form it in place. Then I used a latex glove with the lacquer thinner to try and smooth it out. For me, it took a lot of work and time to make it look pretty, especially alongside the windshield.

Right now I am grinding and stripping the paint off 2 blue doors and have to make them red to put on my van, so I need to start from the beginning on how I did it 3 years ago so they match my Van. Theres a hundred ways and products to go from rust to a shiny paint job. And it can be pretty confusing reading up on them. I just did the best I could and guessed about the rest. But it sure is holding up good, so I was not too wrong on what I did. So after you grind and fix the rust, that PREP STEP can be mixed with water and sprayed on the bare metal. It is a HOLDER,,,it coats the metal and keeps rust from coming back until you get back to it. That Zero Rust is like POR15,,,,on my van it is all that Orange underneath, inside my doors and rockers and on my gas tank. I like it,,,,it can be top coated but I like it the way it is,,,,The 579 and 520 are metal cleaners and conditioners that I used on the bare metal and then PREP ALL
is just a FINAL solvent cleaner wiped on before the spraying starts. I used a green etching primer NAPA Crossfire 15210. Now I am having a problem finding it,,,(another new California law),,,,but I still have some left. You need to be sure you get something that sticks to bare metal,,,Epoxy primer will work and I just bought some Direct to Metal primer 5 star Extreme #5425, on Ebay to try out on those motorcycle parts I am painting. Its supposed to be like epoxy. Zero Rust has a website and JC Whitney sells it. I use it as an undercoat to stop rust and you can spray it, roll it or pour it inside places that rust hides. Right now I am digging up all these paints and chemicals to make some pretty red doors for my van.

So,,,,do you have to go to Prep School to understand all this stuff?? My 1st choice for the roof rust would be the Jasco Prep and Prime. It converts rust and turns the metal black. You can add body filler over it. then prime and paint it. Home Depot probably has it. That KlearStrip Prime and Etch is a rust remover,,,,probably AutoZone has it. Prep All has nothing to do with rust,,,it is a grease and wax remover,,,,wipe it on with a paper towel, rub it dry,,,,then start slapping primer. Prep Step is a cleaner/rust remover/temporary bare metal sealer.

Ben, if the laminate you buy doesn't have a backing you can use windshield urethane to glue it to just about anything. Cut your backing then cut and glue the laminate to make your panels. Take pics, I wanna see how it goes.
